FOX Sports has announced the assignments of commentators for the group stage of the 2018 FIFA World Cup.
With only two lead commentators out of six in Russia (while all of the others will be calling games off a TV screen from a studio in Los Angeles), it’ll be interesting to see how much of a difference it’ll be to the viewers despite a FOX Sports executive saying it’s no big deal. For soccer fans who watch the sport often on TV, most of us will be able to notice.
SEE MORE: Schedule of FOX commentators for Round of 16 games
Looking at the assignment of announcers, FOX’s lead commentary team of John Strong and Stu Holden will commentate nine of the games in the group stage including two of the matches featuring Argentina.
Meanwhile the honors of announcing the first game goes to JP Dellacamera and Tony Meola.

I pray that someday the Fox announcers will stop calling the Penalty Area “THE BOX.”
Futbol/Soccer is a game where sportsmanship is expected and the announcers of a game have a responsibility to speak with more finesse.
Calling it ‘THE BOX” is almost as bad as saying “Offsides.”
“The box” is normal when referring to the penalty area, Some commentators use this term and sum will say “penalty area” or “penalty box” There are far more annoyances used by US commentators, like describing in detail what can clearly be seen by everyone watching the TV. Methods of commentating on Radio and TV are different skills and US commentators need to learn these basic skills.
fox announcers are hired apparently on the basis of their “skill” at perpetuating american college soccerball commentary, which is why they all refer to “1 v 1” and the rest of the college lingo the sheltered american game has generated.
so fox’s demand for America First leaves us wit glenn davis preferring the expression “and here come south korea” to giving enough of a sh** to distinguish hwang from lee from kim whereas he seems to know all the anglo surnames.
not that many koreans at his golf course it seems
aly wagner sucks, get her off the air
and replace her with what: more air time for dellacamera strong and davis, the WORST football commentators evr?
Amy has to go
Absolutely awful play by play filled with US coaching cliches that confuse the Dickens out of our players. She is not ready to announce the male game. She is destroying my enjoyment of the cup. Please just give me the sound feed from the stadium and give me the announcing in closed caption
I actually muted the Iceland Nigeria game because her commentating was so horrendous. She explains the game like the audience is watching soccer for the first time. Had no intelligent thoughts to give or any impressive analytical breakdowns of anything going on during the game. Disagreeed with what felt like every refereeing decision despite congruent agreement from her colleagues supporting the referees decisions.
OMG, great analysis in my opinion
Damn the feminists to hell. The women do not belong commenting on the mens game.
Well in your logic, why should we have the men commentating on the Women’s World Cup?
You right I don’t watch it so ergo I don’t care.
exactly. if i want to hear a girl comment on squads she knows nothing about i’ll take stuart holden and cobi jones.
Excellent point Brett!! could not have said it better. To Henry,.. who watches Womans WC??
Ally Wagner is FAR superior to bloody Tony Meola. Brett…how’s that Making Amurica Grate again going for ya?
Tony Meola is terrible. He keeps referring to “intended receivers”. WTF?!
I’m going to start watching it in spanish
Ally Wagner grates on my nerves. Away please.
Ally Wagner being superior to Meola doesn’t mean much. Her commentary is appalling and plain stupid at time and her voice is absolutely grating.
It’s a shame Fox couldn’t get the services of Martin Tyler. He works for Sky Sports in the UK which doesn’t have TV rights to the World Cup so Martin would be available.
competant football commentary is obv NOT a fox priority if it means stifling the “americans” (copyright Rob knownothing Stone)
Just watched World Cup Highlights, 30 minutes show on FS2. Does anyone know which production is that show and who are the commentators? Definitely not “regular” FOX Sport package.
Jorge Perez-Navarro and Mariano Trujillo??? Are you kidding me. Need to take pain killers to listen to these two. Off to Telemundo when these two appear.
leaving one to wonder why you’d ever leave telemundo at all this world cup
I finally muted the volume to block out Jorge Perez-Navarro. He commentates strictly as a Mexican supporter during the Mexico/So.Korea game. When the So. Korean goalkeeper made a super save, he made no mention of it at all. Only mentioned the great strike by the Mexico player. One small instance of many like it. He is a disaster.
I stopped watching the Peru vs Denmark game because of Jorge Perez-Navarro.
His stupid jokes, know it all and painfully condescending attitude were more than I could take.
I will avoid watching the other games when he will be commenting.
Darek Rae mentioned how Trump imposed sanctions on Iran. John Strong talked about Ronaldo’s relatives being a fan of Ronald Regan when he was an actor. Jorge Perez-Navarro said how Denmark brought a tornado into Russia. When a player was in an offside position, Mr. Navarro yelled hold on hold on. Don’t get me started with Tony Meola, he continues to embarrass himself.
you’re just scratching the surface mate. standing out tallest amid the garbage is alexi lala looking for facebook hits with his analysis of russia 5- saudis 0: ”
This helps vldimir putin”.
it’s like, can you just restrict your incompetance to football?
You need to get over yourself. Mate.
The announcer mugshots have no identification, nor does any appear when the mugs are clicked. Kinda worthless.
The article is a schedule of commentator assignments. What you’re looking for is a guide to the commentators, which can be found at http://worldsoccertalk.com/2018/05/27/guide-to-foxs-world-cup-commentators/
it’s like almost a metaphor somehow
John Strong and Stu Holden, Worst commentary and annoying voices. Can they get someone that doesn’t ramble on about nonsense stuff? I would rather listen to seagulls mating.
I have been avidly following the WC for 24 years, even traveled to Foxboro to see Argentina compete against Nigeria in 1994. Four years is a long time to wait for this great tournament, but I always eagerly do. I must say I am greatly disappointed in the substandard commentators chosen to call the 2018 matches. It’s a damn shame that I was moved to such a state of boredom by the dull commentary during the Argentina/Iceland match that I actually fell asleep. Where are all the great commentators that I have enjoyed for many years??? Ian Darke? Jon Champion? Adrian Healy? Craig Burley? Not only do these experts provide impeccable analysis, they also provide beautifully eloquent, factually informative, and vividly descriptive color commentary that make the matches come alive. Tragic they are not with us for WC 2018, Hopefully they will be calling the matches from UAE in 2022, guiding us through our next WC experience and making it a great one. Gentleman, you are missed.
oh, and they KNOW SOMETHING about the squads they’re being paid to comment about!
Well said. FOX paid a lot of money to get the World Cup and then skimped on the commentators. Tragic!!!
Combining Derek Rae and Aly Wagner is like mixing oil with water …
I will take Aly Wagner announcing any day over Tony “The Box” Meola. She actually knows what she’s talking about and she never was a mediocre goalkeeper.
I think that Fox has given guidance to the American commentators that they should educate the American public on the fundamentals of soccer. Their script appears to be indoctrinated by US youth coaching vocabulary. The result is awful.
Amen Brother.
I want to hear this team Jorge Perez-Navarro and Mariano Trujillo more often. They are fun and knowledgeable.
The fox commentators are awful. The girl needs to stop yelling, we can here you….
Watching the studio analysts in the FOX Red Square studio between matches, you can hear people yelling, whistling loudly, and screaming in the background. I can’t make out what they are saying but it’s certainly annoying. Did they not soundproof their sound stage in Red Square or did they leave a mic live on the outside deck of their studio?
Terrible commentators!!! Listening, or TRYING to listen to the Russia-Egypt game but unless you’re watching the match, you have no idea what is going on. Completely useless – so much dead air. Talking about the stadium when Egypt is trying to score. Dumb. Sorry guys, you need to do better. FOX needs to do better.
Can somebody tell John Strong to stop referring to 1986 Soviet team as “Russian”? That team was 90% Dynamo Kiev which was never Russian!
Go watch RT, Boris.
” The blue Samurai ” !!!! Really !!!!! Is that like those people ? Jorge Navarro & Mr Trujillo
That sounds as bad as the European golf analyst referring to golfers as ” the South African ”
The American, The Pole. Really! every human has a name Damn you ! learn how to pronounce
names and practice them before you go on air.
The blue Samurai all because you were to lazy to pronounce Japanese names. You are fired !!!! Ass !!!!
Stop it. All of you sound like freakin’ idiots.
If the commentators are really bothering you that much, then mute the damn TV.
Are you watching for your love of the game or to criticize the commentators?
Give it a break.
Is that you, Lalas?
Did Aly Wagner say “There’s still the second half dear”? Is Derek Rae her kid?
Please get more people like Jorge Perez-Navarro to narrate. He knows how to do it. The narrator is an important entertainment factor when watching a broadcasting game. He/she should infuse enthusiasm, transmit the excitement of the game, the importance of the tournament.
Now would someone clarify why we have commentators with heavy Spanish accent on Fox English channel? If the intended audience is Spanish speaking one, let’s just broadcast in full Spanish and do away with this charade. It reminds of me of the old WWII movies with Germans speaking English with German accent!
Needless to say, the whole broadcast commentary of this world cup is a qualified disaster!
Aly Wagner talks too much. She should let the action on the field speak for itself.
While many “PC” obsessed people praise Wagner, they will bypass another bad moment/mistake from her. In the first half of France and Peru, she credited France’s “substitutions” for Mbappe’s goal.
Of course, France made no substitutions at that point in the match.
Watching Fox Sports Go “360” live on my big screen. One camera coverage from behind one goal. Natural sound from the venue. No replays
Also watching FOX coverage on a computer monitor close by, which is about 5 seconds behind the “360” feed.
The 360 camera angle has been terrific as you see all 22 players all the time, and watching “off the ball” action has been very instructional on team shape and tactics.
And anytime there is a play that FOX will replay, a quick visit to the computer monitor lets me see other angles.
Never have to listen to a commentator unless something happens that needs an explanation.
Anyone else doing something similar?
Oh, and I’d rather read the “live” pre and post match commentary on sites like BBC and The Guardian, than listen to the Fox talking heads.
JP Della sounds like he’s calling a baseball game, hes so overrated. The whole FOX team has been terrible with the exception of Derek. The should’ve had Derek Rae commentate all games; he is the only one there that knows worldwide soccer.
Agreed, although I also think Warren Barton does an OK job. The rest of them are more suited to MLS matches.
For all readers, like me, who had been hunting for the world feed commentators schedule, please check this out, courtesy bigddan11. I hope the worldsoccertalk team would be able to help us with an update by tomorrow. I am watching from the UK on the beIN Sports world feed.

Watching Korea vs. Mexico , The announcers are so slanted towards Mexican it seems like you’re watching Mexican station. Ridiculous.
I really dislike the commentary by Jorge Perez-Navarro. His comments are inaccurate and have to be walked back by his co-host often, he makes stupid emotional comments, says, ‘oops’ when players do headers (intentionally), and does that SUPER annoying Goooooal yell when someone scores (and sometimes yells it when they haven’t and has to retract it). I enjoy watching and getting that kind of commentary on Telemundo sometimes, but really don’t want it on the main TV station! By comparison, Trujillo says more informative and accurate comments and I expect those basic, quality aspects when I watch soccer. Soccer fans have gotten used to better and it’s difficult to listen to this overly simplistic man who yells bs every time the ball gets near the goal. I’d love it if Fox replaced Perez-Navarro with someone less cartoonishly entertaining and more mature and insightful.
I totally agree with you.
Jorge Perez-Navarro is so condescending, his comments are full of his opinions rather than facts, and all around totally useless.
I don’t know how people working with him can stand him, but I left about half way through the last game he commented, and I am tempted to leave now too.
The commentator of Korea and Mexico is so annoying and argumentative with his co worker.. so unprofessional and very annoying… he seems to be in love with the Mexican players especially Chicharon …
Has FOX Sports seen all the people that commented against the Jorge Perez-Navarro commentator?
Do they have anything to say? Is it worth it aggravating so many people by having a moron of commentator that is condescending, brings no knowledge to the game and puts down his coworker all the time, contradicts it and talks over him. Yet what he says is mostly… noise.
It is ridiculous how biased are Jorge Perez-Navarro and Mariano Trujillo when Mexico plays. Another thing is no one wants to hear their opinion. They are there to comment the game. He said that “he doesn’t think that Croatia is a good team. He wants to see it play against a better team.” They destroyed Argentina. What better team? Is that Mexico?
The thing that’s been pissing me off the most is that one of the lady’s keeps saying “and he draws the foul”.
This isn’t basketball where players intentionally initiate contact while shooting to draw a foul. On the same note a foul in basketball can be as simple as touching a hand in the act of shooting, which allows players to “draw a foul” without risking any physical harm. Players in the world cup aren’t going out of their way trying to get their shins kicked or their feet cleated in order to get a free kick… there’s no tactic where players go seeking a certain degree of contact like in basketball.
It’s true that there is some flopping and exaggeration of fouls committed, but there is no such thing as “drawing a foul”. My god does it annoy me how uncultured she sounds when she says that every 2 minutes.
Jorge Perez-Navarro and Mariano Trujillo the worst commenting duo in History “iiiiiit’s soccer tiiiiiiime” “a super duper goal” FFS!
I can’t stand those two. I endured one match with them. Now when I tune in and they’re on I turn the channel. They’re ridiculous. That over the top sh** might work in the Latino market but doesn’t work for me. HORRIBLE
one sided biased Germany v Sweden coverage… they keep saying if Germany losses during the game. Wonder who runs Fox Network?
I did not appreciate that the commentator wrote Germany off after 35 minutes into the game. I was close to muting the game. I don’t mind him mentioning once that if Germany does not win this game they are out but not over and over as if we don’t know that. Comments like that take the fun out of watching the games! Was watching the game Poland against Columbia and as soon as Poland was down 0:1 the commentator had to comment that as it stands Poland is out. I turned off the TV.
Please get rid of Ally Wagner. “Initiative on the flank”….what the hell does that mean?
And she won’t shut up with her inane comments and sentences that trail off into unfinished dead ends. She seems to think she’s the commentator. Another example of poor planning by Fox.
Derek Rae is the best. J.P Dellacamera, John Strong and Mark Fallowill are all good. But Jorge Perez-Navarro has got to go. He tries too hard to be funny and comes off as being buffoonish.
On the Telemundo side, Cantor is good but I really like Sammy Sadovnik. His goal calls aren’t as good as Cantor’s, but his game calling and descriptions leading up to a shot on goal are better.
Lost you at the section of your comment where you refer to J.P. Dellacamera as “good”.
US Men’s futbol team can’t compete with the big boys, but Fox announcers Fox & Holden can: historical perspective, intimate sport knowledge & clear love of game produce championship caliber experience. Doubts? Rewatch/rehear Colombia vs Poland. PLEASE let them call EVERY match of the knock out stages!!!!!!
What’s up, Stu? Hope you’re having a good time in Russia.
You must be out of your mind….
FOX needs to get rid of all the announcers except
Jorge Perez-Navarro and Mariano Trujillo. They make the game exciting. Everyone else are so boring and puts you asleep!
I have really enjoyed listening to the commentary teams at Telemundo. I just can’t watch football listening to Fox commentators; they are AWEFUL!
It would bee appreciated if you could let us know in advance (before the game starts) who the commrntators will be for the FIFa world feed. Here in Canada and 70 other countries are depending on the international feed..
We’d love to but we don’t believe the information has been released to the public.
@Ali, I posted the commentators schedule for the world feed, Fox and telemundo here. Please check my earlier posts. I will post the knockout stage schedule as soon as it is out.
Thanks for giving us the heads up. Here in Canada we are so used to the ‘world feed’ for World Cup, Euros, premier league that having to listen to Alexi Lalas or any of the Fox announcers seems a real step back.
Is there a list of which countries or networks use the ‘World Feed’. I gather it is TSN/CTV in Canada and BeIN Sports where they have the english language rights. I imagine Australia, NZ, South Africa?
Thank you! Can’t wait to hear who it will be. I’m comparing where to watch: World Feed or BBC/ITV. Can you also include the BBC and ITV in your post. Thank you
Fox may be saying too much because they are the only English language providers available in the the States. The US World Cup radio contract went to Futbol de Primera, Spanish only. Tunein had to scramble to set up audio feed with Fox.
Jorge Perez-Navarro is the worst announcer for the #WorldCup. He is one sided and only says negative comments towards the non-Latino teams. I would rather listen to the game with no announcer then this joker. FOX – please start spending money on true announcers. #Worst #StepUpYourGame #JORGEPerezIsHorrbile
Tayo, Thanks for posting the world feed commentators. Are the world feed commentators in the stadium?
All of the commentators on the world-feed are in Russia at the stadiums.
Meola is not everyone’s cup of tea but he can read the game unlike the majority of the other Fox co commentators especially Holden who sounds like a 14 year old waiting for his voice to change and speaks in cliches learned from UK commentators.
Is this and the Telemundo list going to get updated for the knockout round?
