Berlin (AFP) – Manchester City winger Leroy Sane on Tuesday became the latest Germany player to miss next month’s Confederations Cup in Russia after ruling himself out because of surgery on his nose.

“I would like to be in Russia but after consultation with the doctors I have decided to use the summer break for this procedure so that I can start the new season problem-free,” he told DFB.de, without giving details about the issue with his nose.

Germany head coach Joachim Loew has until June 7 to name Sane’s replacement for his 23-man squad.

Loew has named an inexperienced squad which includes seven uncapped players and Germany start their Confederations Cup campaign against Australia in Sochi on June 19.

They also face Chile and Cameroon in Group B.

Germany are already missing World Cup-winners including captain Manuel Neuer, Jerome Boateng, Mats Hummels, Benedikt Hoewedes, Mario Goetze, Sami Khedira, Toni Kroos and Thomas Mueller, all either rested or injured.

The 21-year-old Sane has won six caps for Germany and is not a first-choice player under Loew.

Before flying to Russia, Germany play a warm-up friendly at Denmark on June 6, then a 2018 World Cup qualifier against minnows San Marino on June 10 in Nuremberg.
