Arsenal could be set for a massive transformation this summer. With their manager of 21 years and their two best players, Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Özil, all possibly on the way out, there might be some big holes to fill during the summer transfer market. Sanchez and Özil have their current contracts expire following the 2017/18 campaign, and have yet to agree to terms on a new deal. Losing either (or both) would be a massive blow to the club’s title hopes looking forward.

Although the aforementioned dynamic duo are the most important piece(s) of business to take care of this summer, there are other areas in which the Gunners need improvement as well. One area is certainly at left back. Nacho Monreal has been a solid signing since he arrived in 2013; however, the Spaniard’s fall from grace this season has been noticeable.

Along with the 31-year-old Monreal, the Gunners also have Kieran Gibbs at the position as well. While Gibbs is a decent option at left back, he probably isn’t worthy of a regular starting spot with a team like Arsenal. Liverpool and West Ham have been linked with a move for the occasional England international, and a deal for a new left back by Arsenal would certainly mean either Monreal or Gibbs would be on the way out.

With confidence lacking in the current Arsenal left back duo, whomever manages the Gunners next season and beyond will most likely look to bring in a new player at the position. Listed below are three solid left back options for the Gunners.

Djibril Sidibe

Sidibe just joined Monaco from Lille last summer, but it appears as if his current club are open to cashing in on the versatile defender. Able to play either left back or right back, Sidibe would be good addition to the Arsenal team. Not only would he fit their attacking style of play, as the 24-year-old has four assists during Ligue 1 play, but he can also provide cover at right back should Hector Bellerin be injured or suspended.

The defender has also recently claimed that he would be open to a move away from the Mediterranean coast.  “If a club that I can’t turn down wants me and can guarantee me playing time I would have to think about it,” Sidibe told RMC.

Jonas Hector

More of a defensive full back than Sidibe, Hector currently plies his trade with the German club FC Köln. At 26 (27 in May), he is the oldest of the trio of defenders in this piece. Nevertheless, Hector is a proven Germany international and was the first choice left back during the 2016 Euros.

Arsenal currently have three Germans on their roster (Özil, Per Mertesacker, and Shkodran Mustafi), which could become helpful in a potential pursuit of Hector. The German defender has also reportedly been targeted by both Chelsea and Liverpool.

Mattia De Sciglio

The Gunners would have to join Juventus, Atletico Madrid, Bayern Munich, and Liverpool in any approach for the Italian defender. Much like Sidibe, De Sciglio is a versatile defender, able to play either left back or right back. The versatility of these two defenders should be a major selling point, as Arsenal do not really have a solid option at right back behind Bellerin.

De Sciglio was once considered potentially the next great Italian defender, and was even described as the heir apparent to legend Paolo Maldini.  Nevertheless, inconsistency and injuries hindered his development.  De Sciglio has, however, been able to remain fairly healthy over the last year or two, and has shown his qualities on the pitch with AC Milan.
