Tokyo (AFP) – Japan’s Urawa Red Diamonds have condemned a supporter’s racist tweet targeting a rival player, in the latest of a string of similar incidents.

The 2007 Asian champions said the tweet, aimed at Kashima Antlers’ Brazilian striker Caio, was “absolutely intolerable”.

The offensive tweet was posted by an apparent supporter under the handle @urawatsubasa, who took it down and apologised, according to local reports. The account was later deleted.

Caio responded by tweeting “I am proud of being black” on Saturday. The J-League has not announced any punishment for Urawa.

The latest incident came months after another Urawa supporter posted a racist tweet against Gamba Osaka’s striker Patric after losing a game.

In 2014, Urawa were ordered to play a home game in front of an empty stadium in an unprecedented punishment after fans hoisted a “Japanese only” banner.

The J-League imposed the punishment after an investigation highlighted severe damage to the image of Japanese football.

Urawa have also been punished in the past for racist chants from their supporters.
