AEK upset Olympiakos in Greek Cup final

Athens (AFP) – AEK Athens surprised Olympiakos 2-1 to win the Greek Cup final on Tuesday at an empty Athens Olympic Stadium.

Goals by captain Petros Mantalos in the 38th minute and by Algerian forward Rafik Djebbour in the 51st minute lifted AEK to their 15th Greek Cup.

Argentine midfielder Alejandro Dominguez pulled one back for Olympiakos six minutes from time.

Olympiakos were looking to win the trophy for the 28th time and secure an 18th double after winning their 43rd Greek Super League title last month.

For AEK, who finished third in the league to qualify for the play-offs for a Champions League berth, it is a first major trophy since they won the Cup in 2011.

The match was played without spectators as ordered by the country’s Deputy Sports Minister Stavros Kontonis for fear of violence.

“Today’s final is not what you would have expected. The stadium should have been full of life,” said Greek federation president Giorgos Gkirtzikis to OTE-TV.

FIFA representative and president of the Cyprus FA Kostakis Koutsokoumnis called it “a lifeless final.”

Earlier this month the Greek government postponed the final due to lack of proper security for the match.

In March Kontonis cancelled the competition following violence during the semi-final first leg between PAOK and Olympiakos, but gave in to pressure from FIFA and UEFA to continue the tournament.
