Thiago Motta has ended speculation about his future by signing a one-year contract extension with Paris St Germain.

The Italy international had been linked with a move away from the French champions, with Arsenal, Liverpool and his former clubs Atletico Madrid and Inter Milan reported to be among those clubs interested in acquiring his services.

However, the defensive midfielder, who turned 33 on Friday, put pen to paper on a deal with PSG that ties him to the Parc des Princes until June 30, 2017.

PSG president Nasser Al Khelaifi said of Motta – who has helped PSG win three successive Ligue 1 titles since joining the club in January 2012 – on his club’s official website: “I am extremely happy to see Thiago Motta extend his contract.

“Thiago is a fan favorite, as we saw during the last match at the Parc des Princes, when the crowd chanted his name several times.

“Since the start of this season, he has once again proved what an important element he remains in our playing system. Over the past few years, his immense experience has been crucial in the team’s progress.

“His experience in the Champions League, which he has already won twice, will once again be integral to the club’s ambitions to take the next step in Europe.

“For me, there was never any question of letting such a great player leave the club.”
