Draw for 2015/16 Europa League announced; Big names face tough tests

Tottenham have been handed a daunting group in the Europa League including a long haul trip to Azerbaijan.

Spurs were drawn in Group J with Monaco, Anderlecht and FK Qarabag, who play matches in Azerbaijan’s capital Baku.

Liverpool’s task is also not straightforward with games against Russian side Rubin Kazan, Bordeaux and Swiss club Sion in Group B.

Celtic have the prospect of facing Robin van Persie and Nani’s new side Fenerbahce plus Ajax and Molde from Norway in Group A.

PROGRAMMING NOTE: For viewers in the United States, the Europa League will be shown live on FOX Sports and FOX Soccer 2GO.

Club Brugge, who got knocked out of the UEFA Champions League playoff round, will face tricky ties in the Europa League against Napoli, Legia and Midtjylland.

Similarly, Lazio will face tough opposition in their group against Lazio, St. Etienne and Rosenborg.

Matchday 1 of the UEFA Europa League kicks off on Thursday, September 17.

It is also tough analyzing who is going to go on to win the UEL because of the teams that finish in 3 place in their groups in the UCL will enter in the round of 32. If City finish 3 in their group and are doing well in the league I think they will switch off in the UEL and get knocked out, but if Sevilla finish 3 and are out of the UCL spots in the league I see them trying to go all out and win it for 3rd time in a row vs Dortmund in the final if the bracket works out that way.

As there is no mention of Dortmund in this article, here is my take. BVB get a very favorable draw. However, with all the travel involved within the group I hope that Tuchel can get a nice squad rotation going. Probably too early to say but I see Napoli as co-favorites in this competition and Dortmund is familiar with them as they were in the same UCL group last campaign.

As for the English teams, neither will win the competition. Spurs may get out of their group but probably won’t go far after that. Liverpool look much stronger than Spurs but I see a quarterfinal exit for them. Schalke, Villareal, and Fiorentina are strong teams and could make a deep run in this competition.

I am looking forward to the EL group stage games. Unlike the CL, where I can guarantee that all 4 semi-finalists will be determined among Real, Barca, Bayern Munchen, PSG, and Chelsea, and maybe Manchester City, I can’t make any such predictions in the EL.

Hopefully Fox Soccer won’t force-feed us Tottenham and Liverpool games only…good football is being played outside of England as well, I hear…
