Athletic Club vs. Barcelona

Friday, August 14, 4:00 PM, ESPN Deportes

Just four days on from triumphing in the European equivalent, Barcelona will go in search of what will be their fifth trophy of 2015 in the Spanish Super Cup. They’ll visit the superb San Mames for the first game of this two-legged affair, where they’ll meet an Athletic Club team desperate to get their season off to a glorious start.

In midweek, the Blaugrana edged a nine-goal thriller against Sevilla in Tbilisi. Going forward Luis Enrique’s side had the same swagger which served them so well last season, with Lionel Messi leading the attacking charge with two superb free-kicks. But defensively, there was little in terms of cohesion.

It’s a trait the hosts will be looking to exploit before what’ll be a fervent backing. Ernesto Valverde’s side were well beaten by Barca in the final of the Copa del Rey, but in front of their home supporters, the Basque outfit will be confident of testing out Barcelona’s defensive mettle. They’ll be acutely aware that taking a lead back to the Nou Camp will be vital to their chances.

It’s a match which could also have a significant baring on the La Liga season. The two sides meet on the opening day of the domestic campaign at the same venue and the result here will set an important precedent. It’ll be tough for Barca, but after turning over Athletic 5-2 at the San Mames last season, the Catalan giants will be confident of getting the job done.

Borussia Dortmund vs. Borussia Monchengladbach

Saturday, August 15, 12:30 PM, FOX Sports 2, GolTV en Español & FOX Soccer 2GO

Life after Jurgen Klopp begins in earnest for Borussia Dortmund this weekend as the Bundesliga gets underway. But for new manager Thomas Tuchel, it’s an extremely difficult start to domestic life, as BVB go up against last season’s third place team Borussia Monchengladbach.

Tuchel has an almighty challenge on his hands replacing the influence of the effervescent Klopp on the sidelines. But encouragingly for the former Mainz man, Dortmund have preserved their core of quality players, with Mats Hummels, Ilkay Gundogan, Marco Reus and Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang all beginning the season in black and yellow despite reports to the contrary.

Monchengladbach have some sound foundations to build upon. Lucien Favre has constructed an exciting young squad that’s capable of playing in a variety of different styles. They’ll also have Champions League football to look forward to back at Borussia Park this term, but will have to make do without star striker Max Kruse, who was sold to Wolfsburg.

Expect a special atmosphere to be conjured at the Westfalenstadion for what is the start of a bright new era for Borussia Dortmund. The visitors will certainly pose a stern test to the early work done behind the scenes by Tuchel.

Crystal Palace vs. Arsenal

Sunday, August 16, 8:30 AM, NBCSN & NBC Sports Live Extra

A loss on the opening day of the season for Arsenal means they’re under big pressure going into Week 2 of the Premier League campaign. But a bolstered and confident Crystal Palace team will relish the opportunity to land another early blow on the soft-centered Gunners.

With the astute signing of Petr Cech and some blistering pre-season form to savor, Arsenal were tipped for big things by many this season. West Ham United quickly sapped any momentum from the Emirates Stadium last weekend, though, as Slaven Bilic’s side exposed the age-old flaws. Naturally, as is often the case with the Gunners, the reaction has been typically volatile.

Palace will be delighted to hear that and after their opening day win away at Norwich City, will be desperate to flex their muscles in front of their own supporters. Manager Alan Pardew has done wonderfully to lure Yohan Cabaye to Selhurst Park and he’ll be desperate to make a strong impression on his home debut for the Eagles.

Lose here and Arsenal could easily find themselves bottom of the table and with plenty of ground to make up in the race for the Premier League title. As such, even at this early stage of the season, it’s a massive match for the Gunners and their attempts to end the season with the ultimate prize.

Manchester City vs. Chelsea

Sunday, August 16, 11:00 AM, NBCSN & NBC Sports Live Extra

After a week to forget for Chelsea and Jose Mourinho, the champions will be hoping to make amends with a strong performance against Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday.

The Blues have been making the back pages this week after a row between Mourinho and the club’s medical team. But after failing to sparkle in any of their pre-season matches or their opener against Swansea City, in which they were lucky to get a draw, a major improvement will be needed if they’re to get something out of this titanic encounter.

City will come into this one bristling with confidence. Manuel Pellegrini’s men were sensational in their opening match of the season, swatting West Bromwich Albion aside in a confident 3-0 win. Expect the Etihad, which has been refurbished with added capacity, to be rocking for this crucial contest and for City to respond with a quality display.

If Chelsea lose this one it’ll be a major issue in their quest to regain the Premier League title; a win for City and they’ll surge five points clear of the Blues. Granted, it’s early, but as Chelsea illustrated themselves last season, if a side steals a march on the chasing pack, it can be very difficult to reel them in.

Seattle Sounders vs. Orlando City

Sunday, August 16, 5:00PM, ESPN, Sling TV & WatchESPN

Seattle Sounders will be desperate to end their wretched run of form this weekend as they tackle an Orlando City outfit who are striving for rhythm themselves.

Usually one of the standout sides in Major League Soccer, it’s been extremely tough going for the Sounders as of late. Their loss to LA Galaxy last Sunday was their fifth in succession, which is the most defeats in succession the team has ever suffered in the club’s history. Subsequently, they’ve slipped down to sixth spot in the Western Conference.

The form of the Seattle outfit makes Orlando’s recent run of results look like a purple patch, but there’s no denying Adrian Heath and his team need a spark from somewhere. Still, the Florida franchise are just one place off a playoff spot after all and this game against the struggling Sounders is a great opportunity to move into the top half.

It’s the first time these two teams have ever met and as long as Orlando go on for, it’s not often they’ll find a Sounders team that are this out of form. Nonetheless, it would be foolish to write off Clint Dempsey et al, who will know just how important it is that they put an overdue end to this rut.
