Bayern Munich midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger is poised to sign a three-year deal with Manchester United for a reported fee of 20 million, according to the German publication Bild.

Although the paperwork has yet to be finalized, Bild is claiming the transfer is “imminent”.

Just yesterday, Bayern Munich chief executive Karl-Heinz Rummenigge revealed that he had held talks with Schweinsteiger and admitted the veteran player was “flattered” by the interest from Manchester United.

“I have spoken to Bastian on the phone while we have been on holiday and will speak again now that he is back,” he said. “I cannot deny the fact that I have understood during these conversations that he is flattered by the interest from England.”

Last week, manager Pep Guardiola confessed that Schweinsteiger’s future was out of his hands.

“I have already said, read and heard a lot of things about Basti, but his future depends on him,” said Guardiola.

“I think he will stay, but only he can decide. If he stays, that would be the perfect decision for me. He is a top player.”

Although Guardiola publicly stated he wants Schweinsteiger to remain with the squad, the belief around the Allianz Arena is the veteran’s playing time will continue to be reduced while the Spaniard elects for a more youthful lineup.

Schweinsteiger has been with Bayern Munich since 1998 and would serve as a midfield reinforcement for Michael Carrick – who suffered injury problems for the better part of last season.

While the signing of the 30-year-old German international would represent a break from United’s transfer policy of buying players under the age of 26, there is no questioning the impact the arrival of Schweinsteiger would have to manager Louis van Gaal’s squad.

The World Cup winner would provide insurance to an area on the pitch where United have lacked quality and depth over the past few seasons.

Schweinsteiger has been a long term target for Van Gaal, with the German international helping the Dutch manager win the Bundesliga title and German cup during the 2009-10 season with Bayern Munich.

Earlier today, Van Gaal officially unveiled Memphis Depay as a United player and confirmed that Torino defender Matteo Darmian had flown to Manchester in order to complete his medical ahead of his transfer to the English club.
