Manchester United are on the verge of completing a £10.5 million deal for Torino defender Matteo Darmian.

Late last night, Sky Italia reporter Gianluca Di Marzio broke the news that the 25-year-old full-back was only a few steps away from completing a move to the twenty-time champions of England.

United officials had a £8.5 million bid for the right-back rejected earlier in the week. However, the club accelerated its efforts to sign the player on Monday and is on the verge of completing a transfer for the Italy international.

Sunday, Torino president Urbano Cairo confirmed that three different clubs had made approaches for Darmian – believed to be Bayern Munich, Real Madrid and Manchester United.

Cairo initially declared that Sunday would be the deadline to secure a deal for the Italian defender. However, his timetable was pushed back due to the player’s desire to complete a move and join Manchester United before the English side leaves for its summer tour of the United States.

“An extraordinary player such as Matteo will want to try to win the Champions League and Torino can’t win it,” Cairo told the Italian daily La Stampa.

Darmian began his career with AC Milan before joining Palermo in 2010. He was later loaned out to Torino, where he completed a permanent deal in 2012.

The 25-year-old defender has earned 13 international caps for Italy since making his senior debut in 2014.

His arrival at Old Trafford should signal the end of Antonio Valencia’s time at right-back. The Ecuador international became Louis van Gaal’s first-choice at the position after injuries limited the Dutch managers options last season.

Also, the signing of Darmian from Torino will likely mean the end of Rafael da Silva’s time in Manchester.

The Brazilian full-back has fallen out of favor with Van Gaal and speculation is the defender will be the next United player shown the exit door by the Dutch boss.
