Some teams can’t get stadiums to save their lives – hello, NYCFC, the Revs, and Miami! – and for some teams, the stadiums just seem to fall into place.
LAFC’s debut season has been pushed back to 2018, and the bigger question for me is where this team is going to draw fans from. Chivas USA was a very flawed brand, but even in the best of times – and Bob Bradley-led Chivas teams did make the playoffs once upon a time – there was never much support.
The flagship itself, the LA Galaxy, have a fairly relaxed fan-base that rarely sells out the StubHub Center. Maybe the location of LAFC’s stadium helps the new club with that. But this is a team that exists because of LA’s money, not LA’s fans. We’ll see how that recipe works starting three years from now.
