Real Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillas is targeting Champions League glory since the La Liga title rests in the hands of Barcelona.

The veteran player’s comments shouldn’t come as a surprise to fans. The Madrid captain is merely echoing earlier statements made by manager Carlo Ancelotti who said his side has a better chance of winning the European Cup than it has of overcoming its two-point deficit to league leading Barcelona at this point.

With four games remaining in the season, Barcelona have a relatively light run-in with matches against Cordoba (home), Real Sociedad (home), Atletico Madrid (away) and Deportivo (home).

Whereas Real Madrid have to play La Liga’s current fourth and fifth placed teams in successive weeks – Sevilla (away) and Valencia (home) – before closing the campaign against Espanyol (away) and Getafe (home).

Speaking at a public event earlier today, Casillas admitted the chances of Real Madrid overcoming their two-point deficit and wrestling the league title from Barcelona were slim.

While the veteran player did not rule out winning La Liga, he did go on to say the club’s supporters traditionally preferred winning the European Cup.

“The coach already pointed out that the Champions League is easier to win,” Casillas said.

“The Champions League is still in our hands whilst the league title is currently in Barca’s hands. The last four teams remaining in the Champions League all have a 25% chance of winning.

“Traditionally, Madrid fans prefer European competition, and winning the highest honor in Europe for the second year running would be special as it’s never been done before.”

When asked if he was conceding La Liga to Barcelona, the goalkeeper responded: “We need to beat Sevilla (on Saturday) and wait and to see what happens in Cordoba. I’m sure they won’t want to be mathematically relegated in front of their home fans.”
