After months of positioning on both sides, Dani Alves is on the verge of signing a contract extension with Barcelona.

According to various reports from Spain, an agreement has been reached and an official announcement will be made at the conclusion of the 2014-15 campaign.

The defender is out of contract at the end of the season and has been free to negotiate with other clubs since January.

The length of the contract extension has not been reported. But judging from previous negotiations between the two parties it can be determined that the agreement will be – at least – for the next two seasons.

Last month, the player’s representative, Dinorah Santana, said the right-back was “close to reaching an agreement with another club”.

Almost immediately after that declaration, Barcelona began negotiating an extension with the defender. However, Alves agent ended up rejecting the club’s renewal offer.

“Barca offered up three years in a format of: one year, plus one, plus one. And we said, ‘no’,” Santana explained at the time.

“We wanted three years but they said, ‘no’. Then we suggested two, plus one with the condition that he would get the final year if he played 70 percent of games in the second season. They again said, ‘no’.

“[Then] I received an offer by email. Barca said three years if the player plays at least 60 percent each season, if he doesn’t, it won’t continue year-on-year.

“That for me is not three years. It is one year.”

At that point, Alves’ agent said the negotiations were “closed”. She went on to say if Barcelona “offered two years, plus an optional third, Dani will stay.”

If the news coming from Spain today is correct, it appears the club has given in to Alves’ terms.

The 31-year-old Brazilian is one of the most beloved figures in the Barcelona dressing room and manager Luis Enrique backed the defender to remain at the club past this season.

Despite reported interest from Manchester City, Paris Saint-Germain and Liverpool, it appears Alves is set to finish his career with La Blaugrana.
