It seems like ages ago when fans and the media were questioning Barcelona’s acquisition of Luis Suarez.

The Uruguayan striker has had the support of his teammates and manager since his arrival from Liverpool this summer – even during a stretch which saw the goalscorer struggle to find the back of the net for his new club.

However, during that time Suarez was consistently a threat while also creating chances for his Barcelona teammates.

Last night, the Uruguay international scored the decisive goal which gave Barcelona a 2-1 victory over Real Madrid at the Camp Nou.

Following the match, Luis Enrique heaped praise on Suarez for the striker’s El Clasico performance, as well as his steady contribution over the course of the season.

“His goal is one that very few players are capable of scoring,” Enrique said during his post-match press conference. “But that is exactly why we signed him.

“It’s not just his goals, though, he also helps the team with his attitude and his behavior – he really complements our ideas.

“I think I said this before, he is not just an old-fashioned striker. He is a forward who knows how to relate to his teammates, who can shoot, who is physically tough and who has the right kind of character for the way we play.”

While Enrique praised the striker’s overall performance, Suarez himself realized the significance his goal could end up having in the race for the league title.

“Until now it’s the most important goal I’ve scored for Barcelona,” the Uruguayan told Spanish television. “It has huge meaning because of who it came against.

“The squad is very happy. We knew it was an important game to stay on top of the league, firstly, and to take advantage.

“There is still a lot to do, we know that the league is very difficult. We must seize this advantage against a very strong team such as Madrid.

“As in every league, you never know what can happen if you relax a bit.”
