Atletico Madrid are expected to announced the contract renewal of Diego Simeone in a few days, according to the manager’s agent.
Last month, both Simeone and the club confirmed negotiations were underway to extend the Argentine boss’ current deal in Madrid past its expiration date of June 2017.
The Spanish publication Marca would later report Atletico Madrid were prepared to make the manager the highest paid member of its squad.
Last night, Natalia Simeone, the sister and representative of Diego Simeone, spoke to Spanish television regarding her brother’s contract renewal with the club and confirmed good news was imminent.
“Surrounding the renewal of Simeone at the club, there will be good news in the next few days,” the agent said. “The fans went home happy tonight and they will be happy again soon.”
The representative made her comments after watching her brother guide Atletico Madrid to the quarter-finals of the Champions League by beating Bayer Leverkusen on penalties.
Following a 1-0 defeat in the first leg in Germany, Atletico leveled the tie in the 27th minute when Mario Suarez’s strike deflected in off Omer Toprak.
The grueling match would eventually go to extra time and later to a dramatic penalty shootout. Fernando Torres would score the winning penalty, after Hakan Calhanoglu, Toprak and Stefan Kiessling all missed their attempts for Bayer 04.
“El Cholo always believed in the work of his players,” Natalia Simeone said following the match. “Hard work always pays off as he would say. It was emotional as the fans at the Calderon always give you a shot of adrenalin.”
Diego Simeone is the most wanted managerial property in world football, with the Argentine being heavily-linked with moves to Manchester City, Paris Saint-Germain and Liverpool in recent months.
In just over three years with Simeone at the helm, Atletico have won a Europa League title, the UEFA Super Cup, Spanish Super Cup, Copa del Rey and a La Liga title – while also finishing as Champions League runners-up last season.
Atletico’s players and fans have urged Simeone to remain at the club and build a footballing dynasty similar to the one achieved by Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United, and it appears the manager is set to continue the project he started in the Spanish capital three years ago.
