Luis Suarez has hit out at the English media claiming they are out to get him and further stated they should show him some respect.

The Barcelona striker was speaking after his side’s 2-1 victory over Manchester City in the Champions League Round of 16, a match which saw the Uruguayan score both of his club’s goals.

Following the game, several English newspapers reported Suarez had attempted to bite City defender Martin Demichelis towards the end of the contest. But video evidence clearly proves the Uruguay international did nothing close to what was being reported.

Suarez has a well-documented history of on-the-field transgressions. The striker has been banned on three separate occasions for biting an opponent.

The Uruguayan was suspended for seven matches for biting PSV’s Otman Bakkai on the shoulder during a November 2010 game while playing for Ajax. Later in his career at Liverpool, Suarez was handed a 10-game ban for biting Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic in April 2013. Finally, the striker was issued a four-month FIFA-imposed ban for biting Italy’s Giorgio Chiellini during last summer’s World Cup in Brazil.

Suarez was also handed an eight-match ban and fined £40,000 by the English FA for racially abusing Manchester United defender Patrice Evra during a match at Anfield.

The Uruguay international would create another stir after he refused to shake the United left-back’s hand when the two clubs met again for the first time following the incident.

Suarez has sought help since signing for Barcelona and earlier this season professed he would curtail his behavior on the pitch.

When informed he was accused of biting Demichelis on Tuesday night, the Uruguayan striker went on the attack.

“[Demichelis] put his hand on my throat,” Suarez said. “I do not understand why they [the English media] want to do this. They want to make trouble.

“They must be hurt after what I did to them in the World Cup [scoring a brace in Uruguay’s 2-1 Group D victory], but they forget that I played in England and they should show me some respect.”

Suarez received criticism from a section of fans and the media following his return from the FIFA-imposed ban earlier this season due to the striker’s poor goalscoring record with Barcelona. But the player’s manager and teammates quickly came to his defense stating the Uruguayan was doing what was needed to help the Catalan club win games.

While Suarez has not been the goalscoring machine he was for Liverpool last season, his movement and work rate has never diminished; and the forward has been creating chances for his new teammates.

His goals against Manchester City were his eighth and ninth of the season, with Suarez assisting another 12 goals in all competitions since debuting for Barcelona in late October.
