The last time fans saw Diego Godin, the defender was celebrating Atletico Madrid’s 4-0 defeat of rivals Real Madrid with his teammates.

The Uruguayan played the entire match, even though he took an elbow from midfielder Sami Khedira in the 8th minute which left him on the ground and bleeding profusely from the nose.

At the time, the club’s physicians attended to the 28-year-old center-back and gave him the “OK” to carry on for the remainder of the Madrid derby. A brace was applied to his nose and gauze was stuffed into the defender’s nostrils in order to control the bleeding.

Immediately following the match, Godin was transported to the FREMAP clinic to undergo a CT scan. There it was determined that the Uruguay international would not need surgery, but the defender would need to be fitted with a protective face mask.

This morning, Godin took to his Twitter account to give fans words of encouragement and to showcase his new headgear.

“Just debuting my new mask,” the center-back tweeted. “I’m planning to train with it [today] and thinking of trying it out on Sunday!”

Godin was then pictured in training with the rest of his teammates while donning the protective face mask.

Next up for Atletico Madrid is a trip to struggling Celta Vigo on Sunday.
