Midfielder Sami Khedira has been the odd-man out at Real Madrid in recent times. The German international has been plagued with injuries since last season and has seen his relationship with officials at the Spanish club all but dissolved.

The 27-year-old is out of contract at Real Madrid this summer and reports from Spain believe the club are unwilling to renew his terms. The story goes that Khedira refused a proposed contract renewal last season and in-turn upset the hierarchy within the Spanish club.

It is understood that Madrid officials have already identified targets to replace the German international next summer, and further speculation has suggested that the midfielder could be on his way to Bayern Munich.

Arsenal and Chelsea have been rumored to be monitoring the situation in Madrid. Should the Spanish club fail to extend the midfielder’s contract (and the player doesn’t already have a deal in place with another club), he will be able to leave Madrid for free this summer.

But today, Khedira has told the German daily Stuttgarter Nachrichten that he wants to renew his terms with the ten-time champions of Europe and is willing to fight to win his position back in manager Carlo Ancelotti’s squad.

“If we can reach a solution, I’ll be very happy,” the midfielder told the German daily.

“I am back at a good physical level and for that reason, I’m confident that soon I will get more of a chance to play. There are other players in my position but that competition is healthy.”

Fellow-German international Toni Kroos is one of those players who Khedira would have to dislodge from Ancelotti’s starting eleven. But the 27-year-old complimented Kroos on his ability to fit in so quickly with Madrid and praised his influence on the newly-crowned FIFA Club World Cup champions.

“He [Kroos] is doing extraordinarily well – he has only been at the club for less that half a year and he is already a key component in how the team functions,” Khedira added.

The midfielder concluded the interview by admitting that he would like to end his career at VfB Stuttgart – since he rose through the club’s youth system before reaching its senior squad in October 2006.
