In an interview on the German cable channel Sky 90, former Bayern Munich manager Jupp Heynckes said he believes Borussia Dortmund midfielder Marco Reus should join Real Madrid. The former Bayern boss recommended the switch to Spain because he feels the German champions have too much competition in their attacking positions.
Heynckes led Bayern Munich to the 2013 Champions League title, where they defeated Borussia Dortmund by a score of 2-1 in the final at Wembley Stadium.
The 69-year-old’s comments on German television are likely to raise eyebrows at his former club and further unsettle officials at Dortmund.
“I’d recommend he goes to Madrid,” Heynckes told Sky 90. “Bayern have four or five world class players in the attack. Where is Reus going to play? If he really has a 25 million euros (£20 million) release clause, all the biggest teams in Europe should go after him.”
It was once believed that it was a formality before Reus joined former-BVB teammates Mario Götze and Robert Lewandowski at the Allianz Arena. But relationships between the two Bundesliga clubs have become strained in recent months.
Dortmund have grown tired of seeing their players leave for the Bundesliga champions and comments by Bayern Munich’s outspoken president Franz Beckenbauer, and later from CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, reportedly angered BVB officials.
Beckenbauer commented on the possibility of signing Reus, while Rummenigge revealed that the 25-year-old had a £20 million release clause in his contract – a deal which is set to expire on June 30, 2016.
Since those comments, Dortmund have reportedly ended their ‘friendly’ relationship with the German champions.
As recently as September, widespread rumors began to circulate stating that Reus had already agreed to personal terms and will join Real Madrid next summer.
Both clubs have denied that claim, while the player himself has not commented on the situation.
