Newcastle Ponder Emergency Loan After 3rd String Goalkeeper Jak Alnwick Gets Injured

Newcastle manager Alan Pardew will today consider whether to make a fresh approach to the Premier League over whether he can sign a goalkeeper on an emergency loan ahead of the Tyne-Wear derby.

UPDATE: Alnwick has been declared fit for Sunday’s game against Sunderland.

Following injuries to number one Tim Krul and back-up Rob Elliot, the Magpies have had to field inexperienced Jak Alnwick in recent matches.

Premier League rules prohibited Pardew from bringing in emergency loan cover, meaning the 21-year-old started the 4-1 loss at Arsenal and last night's 4-0 defeat to Tottenham.

Alnwick's error gifted Spurs the first goal of the Capital One Cup quarter-final and, worryingly, could be absent for Sunday's match against fierce rivals Sunderland.

A shoulder injury means the Magpies could have to rely on 17-year-old Freddie Woodman for the derby – a situation Pardew hopes to avoid by making another appeal to the Premier League.

"He has an injury to his shoulder so we're going to have to see," Pardew said of Alnwick.

"It is something we might have to look at tomorrow because there is no way that a 17-year-old [Freddie Woodman] – that's our fourth-choice – should be allowed to go in goal at this level.

"We will perhaps talk to the Premier League tomorrow about Jak's situation."

Asked if Alnwick's injury would have to be independently assessed before a loan was allowed, Pardew said: "I am not actually sure. I'd have to speak to the chief executive.

"The rules do allow you to have an emergency goalkeeper, I do know that, if you've only got one senior fit goalie.

"Freddie is classed as a senior even though he is 17 because he is a professional."

Pardew claims not to have thought about who he could bring in to help sort a goalkeeping situation, muddied further by the fact Newcastle have loaned Karl Darlow to Nottingham Forest.

Things look better further up the field, though, with Moussa Sissoko fit for the Sunderland match despite being withdrawn in the second half at White Hart Lane with a knock.

Papiss Cisse, Daryl Janmaat and Steven Taylor are in line to return at St James' Park, while Sammy Ameobi should be available and Cheick Tiote will be assessed.

As for Tottenham, Emmanuel Adebayor could return when they take on Burnley buoyed by a fine performance against the Magpies.

"It was fantastic," Spurs head coach Mauricio Pochettino said. "It was a fantastic night, a very good performance from the team.

"I am very happy because I think it was the first time that there was the relation between the team and supporters.

"It was brilliant at White Hart Lane and I enjoyed it a lot."

Asked if this was the best Spurs display since he took charge, Pochettino, whose side face Sheffield United in the semi-finals, said: "I don't know but maybe. Maybe.

"I think some games we played very well but this result was important for us.

"It was at home, it is in front of our supporters and we go to the semi-finals of the Capital One Cup.

"We know Tottenham have a lot of tradition in the cups and I think this victory is very important for us."
