UEFA has revealed the 40-man shortlist for its Team of the Year with German champions Bayern Munich leading the way with nine nominations. The nominees were determined based on their overall performances in European club football and international competitions. The best eleven will be determined by fans via an online poll.

After Bayern Munich, European champions Real Madrid are second with eight players nominated. Cristiano Ronaldo is the player with the most appearances in the UEFA Team of the Year, having appeared eight times since the award was first announced in 2001.

Spanish champions Atletico Madrid have four players named to the list: Koke, Arda Turan, Diego Godin and Miranda; with two of their former players also being nominated: Diego Costa and Thibaut Courtois.

This full 40-man shortlist is as follows:

Goalkeepers: Manuel Neuer (Bayern Munich), Thibaut Courtois (Chelsea), Gianluigi Buffon (Juventus) and Beto (Sevilla).

Defenders: Sergio Ramos, Dani Carvajal (Real Madrid); Diego Godin, Miranda (Atletico Madrid); Vincent Kompany, Pablo Zabaleta (Manchester City); Philipp Lahm, Jerome Boateng, Mehdi Benatia, David Alaba (Bayern Munich); Ezequiel Garay (Zenit St. Petersburg); Mats Hummels (Borussia Dortmund).

Midfielder: Toni Kroos, Luka Modric, James Rodriguez (Real Madrid); Arjen Robben, Xabi Alonso (Bayern Munich); Ivan Rakitic (Barcelona); Angel di Maria (Manchester United); Marco Reus (Borussia Dortmund); Paul Pogba (Juventus); Yaya Toure (Manchester City) and Arda Turan (Atletico Madrid).
