Atletico Madrid defender Diego Godin has called for more transparency in the LFP awards voting after he and his teammates were shut out of the La Liga honors on Monday night in the Spanish capital.

Diego Simeone was named Best Manager, but Atletico players were overlooked in every other category, or were simply left off the three-man ballot. Perhaps the two biggest moments of contention during the awards came when Thibaut Courtois was bested for Best Goalkeeper by Keylor Navas, and Miranda was beaten out for Best Defender by Sergio Ramos; Godin was not listed among the three candidates for La Liga’s Best Defender.

The LFP awards for best players and coach are voted for by the three team captains of each club in the division, though they are not allowed to vote for players from their own side.

“They should publish the votes of the captains,” Godin said this week. “That would be the easiest way. They can find it out for you guys [the media]. I found the whole thing very odd for my teammates who were nominated; the fairest would’ve been if they’d won something. But no matter what we say it is ironic when we don’t know the votes. The only rewards in La Liga are the champion, Pichichi (top goal scorer) and the Zamora (goalkeeper with lowest ‘goals-to-games’ ratio).”

Thibaut Courtois was honored with the Zamora trophy in successive years (2012-13 and 2013-14 seasons), while Atletico Madrid’s defense – led by Miranda – conceded the least goals in La Liga last season (26).

“In order to be more transparent, they should publish the captain’s votes. I’m not going to ask every captain who they voted for. I don’t want to get into this anymore. I would’ve liked to see my teammates win some kind of award.”

During an interview on the Spanish radio program El Larguero on Cadena SER, Atletico manager Diego Simeone refused to be drawn into the controversy.

“I think that commenting on that would create controversy among others, and the fact is, if they were nominated, they deserve to be there,” the Argentine boss said on the Spanish radio program.

“We always choose the names and not capacities, but Atletico were at least the best team in the division. We can’t criticize colleagues for winning the awards but I think we’ve all seen the reality of what’s going on there. Our players were the best.”

“Miranda and Godin were part of an extraordinary defense. It was strange not to see them up there, as well as Courtois. Navas is a good goalkeeper, but Courtois has been superior.”
