An ad campaign by a Swedish soft drink maker backfired yesterday when Cristiano Ronaldo scored a hat trick to knock Sweden out of the World Cup playoffs.

The soft drink maker run a campaign that featured images of a Cristiano Ronaldo doll near death. The ads featured Ronaldo as a voodoo doll, strapped to a train track and with a can smashed in his face.

The soft drink maker later released an apology:

“We would never want to put the sport or the spirit of competition in a negative light. We regret if people were offended by the posts; they were immediately taken down. We would like to extend our apologies to all concerned.”
