Interview with Toby Charles from Soccer Made In Germany

Today, we’re beginning a new feature where — from time to time — we’ll delve into our archives to dust off some of our work from the past 7.5 years and to bring it to your attention in case you missed it the first time.

Since the United States men’s national team is playing Germany tomorrow in a friendly in Washington DC, we thought it’d be timely to share with you an interview we did with the one-and-only Toby Charles of Soccer Made In Germany fame, which was one of the most influential soccer programs ever on TV in the United States.

Toby Charles’s commentaries are legendary in soccer circles, especially among children and adults in the 80s who were deprived of watching much soccer on television. His show ran on PBS from 1976 to 1988 and featured highlights of Bundesliga matches.

The phrases he used during his commentaries are legendary, and are still remembered by many soccer fans over 30 years later. And the impact he made can be better understood by this heartfelt letter to Toby Charles we published in 2008.

Listen now to the interview with Toby Charles.

Meanwhile, here’s a video of one of his commentaries here:

Thank you, Gaffer. I had forgotten. Soccer Made In Germany was my first taste of the international game. Before I was a ref. Before I was a ooach. Priceless. 🙂

When I first arrived on these shores close to 40 years ago my first viewing of soccer was on PBS and their weekly German match of the week with Toby Charles. How I cherished that weekly dose of professional soccer. Like Masterpiece Theatre it was a program I looked forward to with anticipation. Toby Charles was one of a kind and I can still hear his distinctive voice.

It also makes me realize how far we’ve come in watching soccer on US TV.
