Eric Wynalda will be named today as interim head coach of NASL team Atlanta Silverbacks, according to an industry source.

Wynalda will replace Alex Pineda Chacon, who was fired Sunday night after a disappointing record in charge of the Silverbacks team. It’s understood that Wynalda will take immediate charge of his Atlanta side, beginning with training today and a game tomorrow night against Carolina Railhawks.

The latest move by Wynalda comes hot on the heels of his success as manager of Cal FC, leading the amateur side through several successful results in the US Open Cup before their defeat against Seattle Sounders. It’s understood that Wynalda will be the interim head coach at the Silverbacks until mid-August, when Wynalda will return to his pundit duties at FOX Soccer in Los Angeles, California.

Meanwhile, the San Diego Flash — the club whose head coach is Warren Barton, Wynalda’s colleague at FOX Soccer — has applied to join NASL.
