The date was May 27, 1981. The European Cup Final between Liverpool and Real Madrid was played in Paris at the Parc des Princes stadium in the French capital.

Real Madrid’s team included stars such as Uli Stielike, Laurie Cunningham and Vicente del Bosque, while Liverpool included their legendary players of Ray Clemence, Phil Neal, Graeme Souness, Alan Kennedy, Ray Kennedy, Phil Thompson, Alan Hansen, Kenny Dalglish, Sammy Lee, David Johnson and Terry McDermott.

The game itself wasn’t a classic. Real Madrid looked like an old fashioned English football team with lots of high-and-hopeful balls into the box, while Liverpool played the continental way with plenty of passing on the ground. At the same time, Real Madrid had few attempts on goal, while Liverpool didn’t create a lot of near misses.

However, it was up to Alan Kennedy who made one speculative run into the box in the 82nd minute and scored a delightful goal from a tough angle. The goal sent the Liverpool fans into raptures and with it came the 1981 European Cup trophy.

As a footnote, you’ll notice that Liverpool had to place white tape over the Umbro logo on their shirts. UEFA at that time did not permit sponsorships from appearing on shirts, so Liverpool had to cover up the Umbro trademark.
