In Loving Memory, Robert Enke.
One year ago today, Robert Enke tragically took his own life after failing to come to terms with severe depression. We pause today to remember and honor his memory, so that in the future tragedies like this one can be avoided. Robert Enke was a professional on and off the pitch, and his memory will last through the ages. Today, Hannover 96 fans commemorated his passing at the AWD Arena by signing a book of condolences. Club president Martin Kind was on hand with a quote:
“Robert will always be a part of us. The memories of last year have not gone away. Robert was a popular figure and a great person. We will always remember him.”
At the AWD Arena last year, Hannover fans filled the ground at the news of his passing and a version of ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ was performed, a song that has become a football anthem since Liverpool adopted it in the 1960’s. Here it is.

I am heartened to see at least the beginnings of some kind of understanding in the football world of the impact depression can & does have on the lives of so many people. Baby steps, but it’s a start.
