While the transfer market hasn’t been too busy with big signings, it’s slowly been spreading that two big strikers will be moving to the Serie A for next season. Ibrahimovic and Adriano could be returning to the league which made them famous, but to different teams. The two ex-Inter Milan players also find themselves in very different situations, one returning from a high, and one from a low…
Ibrahimovic was Barcelona’s big signing last season, he was pretty much the world’s biggest deal that summer, swapping for Eto’o, and costing about another 45 million Euros to Barca. The idea around the transfer was that if Barcelona’s silky smooth, buttery passing style didn’t penetrate through tough teams like Chelsea, they’d have a big target man to swing in crosses and high balls. Hopefully Ibrahimovic would not only compliment the passing style with his creativity, but also act as a Plan B for the Spanish champions. The problem is that while Ibrahimovic had his flashes of brilliance, he was inconsistent, and often had days where he didn’t perform. So now after a rather disappointing season, it seems like he wants to quit on Barcelona, who have recently bought David Villa as a possible replacement.
An unhappy world-class player is a magnet for big teams, and while some rumors suggested he might move to the Premiership with Manchester City, it now seems very possible that he might go to AC Milan. The 28 year old Swede is currently being valued at about 35 million Euros along with Barcelona’s choice between Marco Borriello, or Klaas Jan Huntelaar. The deal seems relatively fair even though I doubt Barcelona are interested in any of the two strikers while they have Pedro, Messi, and Villa, but it’s a good attempt by AC Milan who have been desperately looking for a great striker to build the team around. Berlusconi says that Ibrahimovic would be his “present” to the AC Milan supporters after quite some time of inactivity and disappointment with the club.
Adriano on the other hand has a very different situation, he left Inter Milan unhappy with his contract terminated by the team so that he could return to Brazil to enjoy his remaining years of football playing. He returned to Flamengo and has also returned to his great form of years past by bringing Flamengo the Brazilian championship. Now the emperor is keen on returning to European football, mainly because Adriano is just way too good for the Brazilian league. Meanwhile, Roma are searching for a striker who can stay fit, and score goals, and Adriano ticks the boxes along with the extra bonus of probably being relatively cheap. Adriano would certainly be a great strike partner for Vucinic, and be able to replace the slowly fading Francesco Totti, in the end, a great investment for Roma.
These two great strikers possibly moving to the 2nd and 3rd placed teams in the Serie A would certainly pose a dangerous threat to Inter Milan’s dominance. If the nerazzurri don’t begin to look for a new coach and some new players, Serie A could become a three horse race very quickly.
