Euro 2008 Group C Predictions

So, after watching Croatia give a wonderful impression of England and Germany win their first game at Championships since 1996, today gives us the first day we’ve been waiting for. Group C is the Group of Death, where one of the big boys will definitely go out. Yet I think it will be worse than that, I think two of them will not qualify from this group but more of that later. The first game sees France play Romania in Zurich and I think we’ll have our first shock today. I see the French struggling to get to grips with the Romanians, too many key players are carrying knocks and age is certainly in danger of catching up with Makelele and Thuram in this tournament. Vieira, Henry and Ribery are all doubtful or out of the game completely depending on what you believe, the manager has started to use Astrology to pick his team and Romania are keen to show everyone why they took 4 points of Holland in the qualifiers. I see Romania pinching this one, either 2-1 or 3-2. In Chivu, Mutu, Lobont, Rat and Contra, they’ve top quality players, eager to show pride for their country. In tonight’s match, Holland meet Italy in what should be a mouth-watering clash. Holland though have been rocked with the news that Arjen Robben cannot play tonight on top of a training ground bust up between Van Persie and Sneijder. There is absolutely no doubting the quality that Holland have in midfield and up front but it is at the back that they need to be concerned. They look lightweight and will struggle in this group with the quality of forwards they’ll have to cope with.Adding to the weight of that, their last victory over Italy in a competitive match was in 1978 and Italy are the now the World Champions. Italy have no major worries for tonight, with only a slight doubt over right back Christian Panucci who’ll be glad he doesn’t have to face Robben tonight. Italy will have far too much for the Dutch to cope with tonight and I fancy 2-0 to the Italians. The quality of possession will be key and the Italians will easily pick their way through Holland to take 3 points.

Speaking of Messi, I watched the Argentina demolition exposition of Mexico and Messi was absolutely electric. If he can stay healthy, best player in the world. He was changing direction and pace better than me on my xbox.

RVP, Robben, Saha, Owen, Ashton and on a total different level Messi, all good players all injury prone.

i still think van persie is a very talented center forward and i dont think he could be compared to sneijder. theyre diffrent. i think van persie has the potential to be as good as van nistelroy if he keeps his fitness for the next 4 years. he’s got the potential. i may be biased though. he does have the potential. everything’s there, he just has to be more consistent. at arsenal, there is no question he is our best striker. much more talented than adebayor. we’ve been waiting for him to play a full season and score 30 goals for the past 2 seasons. its bound to happen.

as far as france, i think the full back choices are obviously wrong. clichy and sagna could do a much better job. abidal has not had a good season since leaving lyon last year. i suggest starting samir nasri as well. but im obviously biased. im wondering what number samir nasri will have at arsenal next season. it will be either hleb’s #13, flamini’s #16, alumunia’s #24, or the vacant #23. i think nasri’s number is 22 at marseille. alumunia would get the #1 from lehman.

Michael, RVP has already reported to Van Basten that he wants to play through the middle. As a result he will be resigned as second choice forward (infront of much hyped Huntelaar and Celtic big man with the long name) and may start in the game against Romania. Also Sneijder is likely to fall back deep to partner the impressive Engelaar if Robben is fit (again his return date likely to be Romania) thus replacing the subtle De Jong who i like very much as a player. France as i expected cannot rely on Ribery to replicate the influence Zidane have, nor can they rely on their wingers/fullbacks esp the ones chosen by Domenech to break down discipline teams. Add to the fact they play two defensively minded midfielders (both impressive but have no real goal scoring threat) and the ridiculous laid back tactics employed against Romania (not to press up the park nor attempt to be really win the game in tactical changes), and you have disaster. Though in the context a draw may not be a poor result. Decision to leave Trezeguet home and rely on the tried and tested rather than who is on form could be crucial.

I still expect Italy to get out of the group. Traditionally they are slow starters however Donadoni has to realise that the Milan midfield will not work. The selection of De Rossi, Cassano (my pick), Chellini, Gamberini, Del Peiro and/or Grosso would revitalise this Italian team.

The dutch were amazing. But Lets be honest here, how many of us had Holland winning it 3-0 beforehand?

More quality than Wesley Sneijder, who van Basten played on the left tonight? Not a chance, my friend, not a chance.

of course two of the big teams are going out of the group of death, because they are all technically big teams to the tournament genius
