NASL Have Made a Shrewd Move to Keep Atlanta in The League

With a Major League Soccer (MLS) franchise announced to begin play in 2017 and an ownership group looking to leave, many felt that now would have been the perfect time for the North American Soccer League (NASL) to move out of way and let MLS take center stage in Atlanta. Instead, the NASL has elected to run the Atlanta Silverbacks FC club themselves in 2015 while seeking out new ownership. This decision marks an escalation in the competition between the two leagues and I think we will all be better off for it. Yes, it sounds nice in theory to ... Read more

MLS Marginalizes Regular Season By Placing Emphasis On MLS Cup, Not Supporters’ Shield

Sometimes in the world of Major League Soccer, the only real candor you observe comes when the harsh reality of defeat sets in for a well-experienced head coach. Such was the case on Sunday night. Seattle Sounders coach Sigi Schmid, sulking in the shadow of what could have been, vented as the shattered dreams of the greatest campaign in MLS history were evaporating back into the ether. It was short, sweet, and sums up the feelings of many American soccer viewers. Schmid, on winning the Supporters’ Shield being a consolation: “The Supporters’ Shield is nice. It’s great because it’s a ... Read more

A Change to The Penalty Law – Triple Punishment to be Reviewed

A striker is through on goal and hares into the penalty area with just the keeper to beat.   The last covering defender though has a chance to make a last ditch tackle and prevent the striker from getting a shot off; they take a chance and dive in. The tackle is mistimed and instead of making a clean challenge the defender fouls the striker. The referee spots the infringement and has little option but to award a penalty and send off the offender. The punishment doesn’t end there, as the player who committed the foul would also be suspended for ... Read more

Thierry Henry’s MLS Retirement Sees Him Leave Behind an Unfulfilled Legacy

I remember that night like it was yesterday; in April 2012 I had the privilege of doing a post-game interview with Thierry Henry. As a Gunners fan, I was salivating at the chance to put my microphone in front of this legend. Thanks to my then-MLS Talk media pass and a visit to DC for the Red Bulls, I would be getting the chance of a lifetime. Except there was one problem. DC United took New York to the woodshed and beat them 4-1. The visitors’ only goal came from a beautiful free-kick by Henry, a classic example of the ... Read more

MLS Western Conference Finals Preview – LA Galaxy vs. Seattle Sounders

The LA Galaxy and Seattle Sounders have been bitter rivals since Seattle was introduced as the leagues newest expansion team in 2007. The rivalry will add another chapter November 23rd when the two sides meet in the Western Conference Finals 1st leg in Los Angeles. The Galaxy crushed Real Salt Lake in their Semi-Final series, ... MLS Eastern Conference Finals Preview – New England Revolution vs. New York Red Bulls

Boston versus New York. It’s a rivalry that goes back more than a century. The Patriots, Bruins and Red Sox carry the honor of their city into battle against the Jets, Rangers and Yankees. Its now time for the Revolution and Red Bulls to throw their names into the mix. Both teams earned their way into the Eastern Conference Finals, but did so using different paths. The Revolution beat a lackadaisical Columbus Crew team in the first round of the playoffs, while the Red Bulls had to win a one off wild card game against formidable Sporting KC before moving ... USA vs Colombia Preview: London Calling

Since taking over as head coach for the USMNT in July of 2011, Jurgen Klinsmann has made a point of scheduling tough opponents for international friendlies. He’s scheduled Italy in Genoa, France in Paris, Mexico at Azteca, Belgium in Brussels and Cleveland, and Brazil and Germany in Washington DC. Friday is no different as the USA takes on Colombia, currently ranked 3rd in the FIFA rankings and coming off a run to the quarter-finals at the World Cup this summer.
