World Cup 2018 team of the tournament

The 2018 World Cup is in the books, which means it’s time to pick our World Cup Team of the Tournament. I’ll provide 2 players at each position (first team and second team), along with a brief explanation of my selections. Feel free to disagree in the comments below! Goalkeeper: 1st Team: Jordan Pickford, England 2nd Team: Thibaut Courtois, Belgium A difficult selection– Courtois won the Golden Glove Award, but for me, Pickford was better. He made the key save vs. Colombia, and he made several key saves against Sweden and Croatia. Courtois was terrific for Belgium, but when it ... Read more

World Cup Final delivers 17 million viewers across FOX and Telemundo combined

The 2018 FIFA World Cup Final between France and Croatia averaged 17.2 million viewers across the FOX network and Telemundo combined including online viewership. Not reflected in the viewing number is the out-of-home viewership, which included huge numbers that watched the game in bars, restaurants and public watch parties across the United States. TV numbers alone, the France-Croatia final averaged 16.6 million viewers. While not an apples to apples comparison, the 2014 World Cup Final averaged 26.5 million viewers, but that game featured powerhouses Germany and Argentina who generate a lot more interest in the United States than France and ... Croatia’s success underlines parity at World Cup 2018

Entering the tournament, a common question posed revolved around dark horses. “Who is a dark horse in this tournament?” A difficult question. What defines a dark horse? A team that isn’t expected to win it all, but has the capability? That would qualify Belgium, or Colombia, or Uruguay as a dark horse. How about a team that could make a deep run – say to the quarters, or maybe the semis, before bowing out with honor? Regardless of how you define it, it is worth arguing that 3/4 of the semifinalists were dark horses, and 6/8 quarterfinalists were dark horses. ... Read more

Croatia’s remarkable World Cup run fueled by soccer dreams

Two days before Croatia’s semifinal against England, Croatian manager Zlatko Dalić sat with his fingers intertwined, sipping on a coffee and staring almost rebelliously into the cameras. Ruffling his hair, he ruminated aloud while the press look back at him bemused … “Everyone has problems. Everyone has not slept. Some have not slept enough. We will not allow any problems to interfere with us. The big guys went home and the workers are left. I will not accept bronze! It is a dream for us. It will be a pity to be in Russia for a month and not see ... Read more

Russia’s World Cup run defied the odds, here’s a look at how they pulled it off

Hats off to Russia for making their country proud and making it to the quarterfinals. It’s fair to say that few saw that coming. Heading into the World Cup, the Russians ranked 70th in the world, making them the worst ranked team in the tournament. They were also winless in seven friendlies leading up to the World Cup. Making them a long shot to advance out of the weakest group. And this makes what they accomplished that much more impressive.
