Arsenal loans United States prospect Gedion Zelalem to Rangers until January

Arsenal and Rangers have confirmed the loan of United States’ U-20 prospect Gedion Zelalem to the Scottish second-division club until Jan. 3, 2016. The 18-year-old midfielder, who spent Sunday visiting Ibrox Stadium, trained with his new teammates on Monday. The move allows Zelalem to follow in the footsteps of DaMarcus Beasley, Carlos Bocanegra, Maurice Edu and Claudio Reyna – prominent U.S. internationals who had an impact in Glasgow. Unlike those U.S. internationals, however, Zelalem arrives at Ibrox with limited experience at senior club level. To date, Zelalem’s exposure to Arsenal’s first team has been limited to an FA Cup appearance in Jan. 2014 ... U-20 US National Team Are Extremely Talented But Experiencing Problems

Friday night I posted here that there is a bright future ahead of US Soccer based on the U-20 team that is attempting to qualify for its World Cup, and that still stands. The talent on that team is miles above any U-20 team in recent memory, and that’s without some amazing talent left at home. But why then do they have only one point from two games, and scored only one goal from a set piece? If the talent is there, why is that happening? To find out, you have to look up. The problems with the full national ... Read more

Future of US Soccer Is Bright Based on Strong US U-20 Team

If there are frustrated fans of the US Men’s National Team looking for a beacon of light before the January camp gets underway, look to some younger Yanks in Jamaica. The CONCACAF U-20 qualification tournament for the 2015 U-20 World Cup in New Zealand is underway, and if the Yanks on display are any indication, the future for US Soccer is incredibly bright. It’s hard to project a U-20 team for their future national team prospects, but a few have already cracked that ceiling before they’ve even turned 20. The young Fulham midfielder Emerson Hyndman has already broken into Fulham’s ... Read more

USA Crashes Out of U-20 World Cup: Can the MLS-USL PRO Partnership Help Fix the Continued Decline of US Youth Development?

This was supposed to be a different type of United States U-20 team. Managed by US Soccer legend Tab Ramos, the team has more professional players than its predecessors and is in the process of integrating a universal style advocated by Jürgen Klinsmann. The US crashed out of the 2013 FIFA U-20 World Cup with an embarrassing 4-1 defeat to Ghana, a defeat that could have been much worse had it not been for the stellar play of Southampton’s American goalkeeper Cody Cropper. This United States team, filled with players who have come from Major League Soccer academies or turned ... Read more

Vincenzo Bernardo Is A Free Agent But Will Major League Soccer Let Another Italian Get Away?

This past week it was officially announced that Vincenzo Bernardo had opted out of his contract with Italian Serie A club Napoli and is now a free agent. For some weeks there has been speculation that the New Jersey native, who joined Napoli’s primavera squad in 2006, would be coming to Major League Soccer; however, no MLS side has publically expressed a strong interest in signing the small but talented Italian-American midfielder/striker. Despite having success in practice matches against Napoli’s first squad, Bernardo was not getting call-ups from Napoli Coach Roberto Donadoni, who spent time playing for the New York/New ... Read more
