The first round of the 2018 FIFA World Cup has concluded with Telemundo just slightly edging out FOX Sports in viewership. Telemundo averaged 1.968 million viewers through the first 16 matches of the tournament while FOX averaged 1.963 million viewers across the FOX broadcast network and FOX Sports 1. So far, TV viewership from the U.S. has dropped about 44% compared with the last tournament in 2014, according to data from Nielsen. Telemundo is in more than 53 million homes in the United States. After the first 18 games of the 2018 FIFA World Cup, the soccer tournament is averaging 3.7 million viewers on US television across Spanish-language Telemundo and English-language FOX Sports combined. That 3.7 million number doesn’t include the increasing number of people watching the World Cup on streaming (Telemundo Deportes en Vivo had 4.3 million livestreams for the Argentina-Croatia alone). Despite being available in far fewer homes in the United States, Telemundo is generating more viewers across television than FOX Sports after the first five days of the 2018 FIFA World Cup tournament. Telemundo is in more than 53 million homes in the United States. FOX Sports, who have been broadcasting games on the over-the-air FOX network and FS1, are in 116 million homes (FOX) and 84 million homes (FS1) respectively. Sunday’s World Cup match between Brazil and Switzerland averaged 8.4 million viewers across FS1, Telemundo and NBCSN in the Seleção’s first game of the tournament. The Spanish-language broadcast of the game was watched by 4,350,000 viewers across Telemundo and NBCSN, while FOX Sports averaged 4,086,000 viewers for a game that was televised on FS1 instead of FOX because the main FOX network was contractually obligated to broadcast the US Open golf tournament. In the last UEFA Champions League Final broadcast by both FOX Sports and ESPN, the 2017/18 final between Real Madrid and Liverpool averaged 3.0 million viewers in the United States. While the broadcast on the over-the-air FOX network averaged 2,004,000 million viewers, the Real Madrid-Liverpool game in Spanish-language on ESPN Deportes averaged 1,020,000 million for a combined total of 3,024,000 viewers overall. FOX’s final UEFA Champion’s League broadcast averaged record 2.004 million viewers as Real Madrid celebrated their third consecutive Champions League title.
