Liga MX has returned, averaging 379,765 viewers per match window through the first two weeks of the 2018 Apertura, down from 551,385 viewers in the first two weeks of the 2017 Apertura. Even with the benefit of three extra broadcasts to open the 2018 Apertura, total viewership is also down 10% from 7.168 million viewers in the first two weeks of 2017 to 6.456 million in 2018. The 2018 FIFA World Cup Final contested by France and Croatia averaged 16.62 million television viewers across the FOX broadcast network and Telemundo channels. FOX’s English-language coverage drew the largest share of the viewership with 68%, a three percent increase from the 2014 Final. The knockout stage averaged 8.15 million viewers across both networks with 59% of viewers choosing to watch the 2nd half of the tournament on FOX’s networks. The 2018 FIFA World Cup Final between France and Croatia averaged 17.2 million viewers across the FOX network and Telemundo combined including online viewership. Not reflected in the viewing number is the out-of-home viewership, which included huge numbers that watched the game in bars, restaurants and public watch parties across the United States. After broadcasting 64 World Cup games live across Telemundo, Universo and NBCSN, Telemundo Deportes delivered an average of 2.026 million viewers per game and achieved several other noteworthy milestones. FOX Sports and Telemundo Deportes averaged a combined 4.9 million viewers for the final round of the Group Stage, up 24% from the first round of matches and up 7.5% from the second round. Viewership for the third games in the Group Stage peaked for Mexico’s match against Sweden with FOX and Telemundo combining for 6.565 million viewers, a 40% decrease from Mexico’s victory over Korea. The 2018 FIFA World Cup continues to average more than 4 million viewers for every game of the competition across English-language and Spanish-language television combined. From June 14 to July 3, the US World Cup viewership is averaging 4.17 million on television alone. That includes games from the Group Stage through to the end of the Round of 16 matches. Mexico’s second round victory over Korea drew a combined 11.037 million viewers to FOX and Telemundo, making it the most-watched match of the World Cup thus far. It was also Telemundo’s most-watched match with 6.6 million viewers tuning in to their coverage. Germany’s comeback victory over Sweden surpassed FOX’s previous high for viewership, drawing 5.397 million viewers to the English-language broadcast.
