TV ratings for US Men’s National Team down 15% in 2017

In addition to sponsorships and attendance, one of the major ways to gauge the popularity of any sporting event or league in this country is the TV ratings. Soccer is no different. NBC network scores best Premier League viewing figure since September

NBC Sports netted its greatest viewing number since September for a Premier League broadcast on the over-the-air NBC network. The November 18 broadcast of the Manchester United versus Newcastle United match averaged 837,000 viewers on the NBC network. Plus, 45,000 tuned in to watch the game on the Spanish-language Universo broadcast to generate a combined total of 882,000 viewers. The Saturday 12:30-2:30pm ET broadcast ended in a 4-1 victory for the Red Devils. In other Premier League broadcasts from last weekend, 467,000 tuned in to watch Leicester versus Manchester City on NBCSN while 425,000 watched Arsenal-Spurs on NBCSN.

Watch Taylor Twellman’s short-sighted defense of MLS TV ratings [VIDEO]

In a recent speech at The Future of Soccer symposium, ESPN analyst and co-commentator Taylor Twellman went on a rant by using select metrics to defend his case that MLS TV viewing numbers aren’t as bad as everyone makes them out to be. If you take Twellman’s words in isolation (see video below), you would walk away believing that MLS TV viewing numbers are in the same ballpark as those for the Premier League. Most-watched soccer games on US TV for October 31-November 5, 2017

The 2017 MLS Conference Semi-Final second leg’s averaged 262,500 viewers, up 10% from an average of 238,750 viewers for the first leg matches and up 20% from 219,250 for the 2016’s Conference semi-final second legs. Overall MLS Cup Playoff viewership is up around 13% from 2016 and up just 584 viewers from an average of 266,833 in 2015. For the third consecutive week, Club América’s Liga MX game on Univision was the most-watched soccer game in the United States, last week drawing 1.14 million viewers as they took on Puebla. Most-watched soccer games on US TV for October 25-31, 2017

Viewership for the MLS Knockout Round was up slightly from 2016 with an average of 301,000 viewers for the four matches across UniMás, UDN, ESPN2 and FS1. Viewership peaked for October 26th’s early match between expansion side Atlanta United and MLS original Columbus Crew, averaging a combined 577,000 on ESPN2 and UniMás and beating out last season’s top match of the knockout round by 114,000 viewers. Most-watched soccer games on US TV for October 13-22, 2017

The LigaMX Super Clásico match between Club América and Chivas de Guadalajara was unsurprisingly the most-watched soccer match in the United States over the last two weeks. The game drew 1.92 million viewers on Univision and Univision Deportes, equaling the total viewership from the same matchup in the 2016 Apertura one year ago, but down 21% from the two clubs’ meeting in February 2017. Chivas de Guadalajara was also involved in the other match to draw an audience larger than 1 million viewers as they took on Monarcas Morelia. The United States Men’s National Team’s 4-0 victory over Panama in the penultimate round of the “Hex” last Friday was the most-watched soccer match of the week as 1.152 million viewers tuned into the English-language broadcast on ESPN2 and another 1.5 million watched Univision’s Spanish-language broadcasts. The United States’ final match against Trinidad and Tobago, which saw them eliminated from the competition, was seen by 620,000 as the match was only made available on the less popular beIN Sports in English and NBC’s Universo in Spanish. Most-watched soccer games on US TV for September 25-October 1, 2017

Club América’s 2-1 victory over Toluca was the most-watched soccer match of last week with 955,000 viewers tuning in across Univision and Univision Deportes. It was also the most-watched Liga MX match since Club América took on Veracruz on September 9 in the same timeslot. Overall, Liga MX viewership is down over 40% when compared to the first 11 match days of the 2017 Clasura and down 32% compared to the 2016 Apertura.
