Los Angeles (AFP) – Landon Donovan, the all-time US national team scoring leader, has been offered a two-year deal to return to Major League Soccer with Real Salt Lake, according to multiple reports Thursday. Donovan, who has 57 goals in 157 matches with the US side, spent four seasons with the San Jose Earthquakes from 2001-2004 then played for the Los Angeles Galaxy from 2005-2014, coming out of retirement for six regular-season matches and three playoff contests earlier this year. ESPN, Sports Illustrated and Fox Soccer reported that Donovan had been offered a two-year deal by Real Salt Lake. Donovan ... Read more

Joao Plata has been Real Salt Lake’s most important player of 2016 so far

Photo credit: Peter G. Aiken-USA TODAY Sports Joao Plata is in form and extremely dangerous. Four goals and three assists in five games, Plata has been Real Salt Lake’s most important player through the opening stage of the Major League Soccer season. As a matter of fact, Plata has had a hand in at least on goal in every Real Salt Lake match. He has scored the highest rating of any Claret and Cobalt player at 7.73, according to WhoScored.com. Despite being a mere 5ft 2in, Plata has shown his superb nose for goal and ability to pick out teammates ... Read more

FC Dallas end 3 game losing streak with 2-0 win over Real Salt Lake

Penalty kicks and Fabian Castillo stole the show Saturday night at Toyota Stadium in Frisco, Texas as FC Dallas defeated Real Salt Lake 2-0. It may not have been one of the marquee matchups of MLS’ 2015 “Rivalry Week” encore, but both teams entered the match desperately seeking points.  FC Dallas looked to end a three game losing streak and keep the Western Conference title within reach, while Real Salt Lake hoped to gain momentum after just snapping a three game losing streak of their own with a win over Seattle Sounders one week ago. Both teams saw plenty of ... Read more

10 things we learned from MLS gameweek 13

Here are the 10 things we learned from week 13 of the Major League Soccer season. 1. Orlando City is the league’s best show This week started strongly for Orlando City – the club announced last Wednesday that its new soccer-specific stadium in downtown Orlando would be completely privately financed, built on land the club has bought from the city, and will have a capacity 25,000-28,000 instead of the 19,500 it was originally planned to seat. The stadium’s opening has been pushed back to the middle of 2016, meaning Orlando City will open next season at the Citrus Bowl. That ... Read more

10 things we learned from MLS gameweek 11

Here are the 10 things we learned from week eleven of the Major League Soccer season. 1. Seattle Is The Team To Beat The Sounders traveled up to BC Place to take on the front-running Vancouver Whitecaps, replaced Obafemi Martins with Chad Barrett, watched Barrett nab a brace, and returned to Seattle with the Cascadia Cup all but locked up and a three-game home-stand to finish May. Seattle has now won four of their last five, the only loss coming in a shootout at Columbus two weekends ago. Brad Evans continues to improve at center-back, Clint Dempsey is dealing, the ... 10 things we learned from MLS gameweek 9

Here are the 10 things we learned from gameweek nine of the Major League Soccer season. 1. Sleepwalking in LA  Alan Gordon has, single-handedly netted LA somewhere around five of their 13 points this season. Without Gordon, who hit the 200 appearance landmark against Seattle earlier this year, the Galaxy are bottom of the Western Conference. This is, for the moment, LA’s worst team since 2008 – one look at the Robbie Keane-less lineups of the last month makes that clear. And it’s a shame, because when the Galaxy are good, the league is better for it. Of course, this ... Read more

10 things we learned from MLS gameweek 3

Here are the 10 things we learned from week three of MLS. 1. New beginnings in San Jose Thanks in large part to MLS’ generous hand in scheduling the Chicago Fire as the opposition on opening day at the new Avaya Stadium, the San Jose Earthquakes’ big day went off without a hitch. Avaya is gorgeous, easily one of the best venues in the league. The soccer is coming along, albeit slowly, with San Jose’s best coach since they returned in 2008 in Dominic Kinnear, and a roster finally transitioning from brawn to true skill. It appears that the ‘Quakes ... Read more

Ranking MLS’ most popular teams; New research reveals fascinating results

Thanks to a handful of thriving teams, Major League Soccer enters a 20th season few thought it would reach back when the San Jose Clash and D.C. United kicked things off on April 6th, 1996. We know which clubs have enjoyed the most on-field success, but can we accurately say which teams are the most popular? It’s an easier answer for other leagues. The Yankee Evil Empire and Red Sox Nation hog baseball attention. The LA Lakers, despite their recent downturn, lap the NBA’s other teams in worldwide popularity. The NFL’s on-field parity leads to a more equal fan distribution, but ... Read more
