Referee Mark Clattenburg allowed Chelsea-Spurs match to descend into chaos

Yesterday should be about Leicester City and what they have managed to accomplish but for me, as a Tottenham supporter, it was not. Instead, we’re left to talk about what handed Leicester the title: a street brawl disguised as a soccer match. Chelsea and Spurs are big rivals, no doubt, but before yesterday’s match, no Spurs supporter would have said they hated Chelsea more than Arsenal, or even West Ham. That may well have changed after last night. This game should have never devolved into what it became, because all of that was easily preventable. In about the 13th minute, Danny Rose ... Read more

Mark Clattenburg appointed referee for Manchester United-Manchester City derby

The Premier League has appointed referee Mark Clattenburg in charge of the Manchester United versus Manchester City derby on Sunday. He will be joined by assistants Simon Beck and Jake Collin, while Jonathan Moss will serve as the fourth official at Old Trafford. In the past, Clattenburg has been accused of “favoring” Manchester United by rival supporters. However, it’s worth nothing that Clattenburg has only sent off two players in the Premier League this season – and both were from United. Tyler Blackett was shown a straight red card in United’s 5-3 defeat to Leicester City and Luke Shaw was dismissed during a ... Read more

It’s Time to Give Racial Witch-Hunts the Red Card in English Football

Mark Clattenburg will referee Chelsea against Swansea this Sunday. Despite Clattenburg’s magnanimous efforts to put the recent racial accusations against him to bed, we can learn some lessons, lest another hapless victim falls foul to indiscriminate accusations of racism. Liverpool’s Luis Suarez and Chelsea’s John Terry are two high-profile players who’ve been punished for racial abuse. I hope their punishments are deterrents, but I also believe those who feign victimization, perhaps motivated by vengeance, should be deterred. We all hope racism is expunged from soccer. The Premier League is one of the most popular sports leagues in the world, and ... Read more
