No place in MLS for troubled Cosmos – Garber

Toronto (Canada) (AFP) – Major League Soccer will not allow crisis-hit New York Cosmos to join their league as a third team in the area, league commissioner Don Garber said on Friday. The Cosmos, which became the most famous club in American soccer during the 1970s when the likes of Pele and Franz Beckenbauer played in the old North American Soccer League, was reformed five years ago but now faces an uncertain future. Cosmos deny closure reports as North American Soccer League talks continue

New York (AFP) – The fate of the New York Cosmos is hanging in the balance as the club seeks assurances about the future of the crisis-plagued North American Soccer League, sources confirmed to AFP on Tuesday. A club source with knowledge of the situation denied a report that the Cosmos had ceased operations and terminated contracts of its players and staff. NASL game beats college football debut on beIN SPORTS

Last Saturday’s game between Minnesota United and Rayo OKC on beIN SPORTS en Español drew 21,000 viewers, the most for an NASL match since the league’s debut on beIN SPORTS in April, 2016. The NASL also beat out the Conference USA college football game on the beIN SPORTS’ English-language channel, which attracted only 13,000 viewers. The 21,000 viewers for Minnesota United versus Rayo OKC tied the highest rating for a NASL game on beIN SPORTS from earlier this year. The addition of college football to beIN SPORTS’ programming means that Saturday night NASL games appear to be the first casualty of the newly acquired rights deal. Despite being originally scheduled to appear on beIN SPORTS, tonight’s game between Minnesota United and Rayo OKC and next Saturday’s match between Fort Lauderdale Strikers and Indy Eleven have both been moved from beIN SPORTS to beIN SPORTS en Español.
