Most-attended soccer friendlies in US during summer of 2017

Another round of the annual summer friendlies has come and gone. And as has been the case for the last several years, they have been a smashing success both in terms of attendance at the games and people watching on TV. This summer saw three of the biggest clubs in the world in the US for preseason action as Barcelona, Real Madrid and Manchester United all made their presence felt. But plenty of other clubs were here as well including Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester City, Swansea City, AS Roma, Juventus, Paris Saint-Germain. In addition to the European clubs, a number of ... MLS and Gold Cup overshadowed by successful International Champions Cup

This summer has been another win for soccer in the United States, but should we be surprised? It seems that every summer in the United States is now positioned as “the summer of soccer,” and this year’s edition was no exception as many of the best clubs from around the world descended on the United States. Plus, there was the CONCACAF Gold Cup as well as domestic club soccer to keep everyone busy during the hot summer months. But while soccer was the big winner in the United States this summer, Major League Soccer and the Gold Cup were completely ... Read more

Roma-Juventus game brings out passionate fans for enjoyable game in Foxborough

Of all of the matches I covered during this summer’s International Champions Cup, AS Roma against Juventus from Gillette Stadium was perhaps the most unique. Neither club has the star power and recognizable branding of a team like Barcelona or Manchester United. Instead, this matchup drew fans with a strong connection to their team. While the strictly Serie A fixture from Gillette Stadium hosted the second lowest amount of fans of any match I covered during the tournament, this one felt as if there was more to play for. Ahead of kickoff, I walked through the parking lots, visiting tailgates ... Read more

South Florida treated to world-class soccer and large crowds for International Champions Cup

South Florida remains to many American soccer fans the most polarizing market for the sport in the United States. A place where MLS is determined to return, but fans across the nation view with skepticism and a certain degree of disdain. A market that has seen lower division clubs come and go, but in 2017 has nine teams competing in national leagues at the division four level or higher. It’s filled with passion for the sport if not for a single locally-based club or team. Perhaps as last week’s International Champions Cup events demonstrate, the South Florida market is just ... Five goal Spurs-Roma thriller entertains full house at Red Bull Arena

Walking into Red Bull Arena, I was surprised to see how many random soccer jerseys were being worn. I’d come to watch Tottenham Hotspur play AS Roma after all, but if you’d told someone with no knowledge of the fixture to come, they’d have had a hard time telling you exactly who was playing whom. Everton, Chelsea and Manchester United — I even saw an RSL kit — were just a few of the clubs whose colors were on display as I made my way from the parking lot to the press entrance. Unlike Barcelona vs Juventus — which I’d covered just a few days earlier ... Read more
