Colorado Rapids finally move on from Pablo Mastroeni

Photo credit: Isaiah J. Downing-USA TODAY Sports Pablo Mastoreni didn’t set out to be a manager. It was the winter of 2013. FC Dallas was looking for a coach, and the then-Colorado Rapids manager Oscar Pareja — who had spent fourteen years in Dallas before moving to Colorado — wanted the job. The interest was mutual. Pareja was a rising star in the MLS coaching ranks, known already for his player development skills and ability to mold young teams. Dallas was a young team, and Pareja wanted to come home. It was a perfect fit. But with Pareja still under ... Read more

5 Reasons Colorado Rapids are MLS Supporters’ Shield contenders

In six of the last nine Major League Soccer seasons, Colorado Rapids have failed to reach the playoffs. The 2016 season has been surprisingly different, especially after so many fans, journalists and pundits called for coach Pablo Mastroeni’s firing after two less than impressive seasons. The former Rapids’ player has got the ship straightened out for the moment, with Colorado pushing the top of MLS’s overall points ... Read more

Tim Howard’s role at Colorado Rapids is hurting Zac MacMath’s career

Photo credit: AFP On July 4, 2016, Tim Howard made his return to Major League Soccer, debuting with his new team the Colorado Rapids in a match against the Portland Timbers. Normally, only paid subscribers are able to access games on MLS Live, but Major League Soccer decided to stream the game on its website in order to draw more attention to Howard and the league itself. Howard allowed MLS to make him its newest publicity stunt, and it only cost $8 million ($2.29 million per year for 3.5 years). While everyone says he will benefit the club as a ... Read more

Pappa’s late strike lifts Colorado Rapids over LA Galaxy in MLS [VIDEO]

Colorado newcomer Marco Pappa struck in the dying seconds to lift the Rapids to a 1-0 Major League Soccer victory over Los Angeles Galaxy, whose coach Bruce Arena was left fuming on Saturday. The contest at a windswept DSG Park in Denver looked headed to a scoreless draw until Pappa, a 67th minute substitute, scored from close range in the fifth minute of injury time — Arena calling it “ridiculous” and “disgraceful” that so much injury time was added on. “It was bad judgment by the referee and bad judgment by the fourth official not to question it,” Arena said. ... Colorado’s on track to become the laughing stock of Major League Soccer

The 2015 Colorado Rapids were depressing. They finished last in the Western Conference, last in goals scored and last in attendance. They continued to replace young talent with veteran mediocrity. Even technical director Paul Bravo, amidst all the spin, acknowledged that the team was a mess once the ball crossed midfield. Instead of firing head coach Pablo Mastroeni, who has won an abysmal 19 of 71 games during his time in charge, Colorado decided they’d stick with their embattled coach and add a new assistant to focus on reviving the offense. On Thursday, the Rapids announced John Spencer, a man ... Read more
