Chepo’s departure another bad decision by a misguided Chivas

Jose Manuel “Chepo” de la Torre joined an illustrious group on Monday. He became the latest manager fired by Chivas de Guadalajara – the latest in a long line of incompetent business decisions that have turned Mexico’s most important club into Mexico’s most impotent club. It’s an impotency that can be seen beyond the technical area, both on the field and off. Owner Jorge Vergara struggles enough when things were going well, but now the Omnilife founder is locked in a feud with wife Angélica Fuentes about assets with the club at the center. The club’s value is going down, ... Read more

With the news that MLS is basically imploding, the mess that is Chivas USA, in order to sell a new MLS team in Los Angeles, it’s worth looking at what that team could and should do in order to be successful. It’s not as if the team itself has been a complete failure since its inaugural season in 2005. In 2007, Chivas USA won the MLS Western Conference. The club developed some of US Soccer’s best players of the past decade: Sacha Kljestan and Brad Guzan both spent several years at Chivas. But the club hasn’t made the playoffs since ... Read more

Entertaining Vincent Tan Will Add Spice to New LA MLS Team [PHOTOS]

Just because Vincent Tan may become a minority investor in Chivas USA doesn’t mean that the Malaysian is not going to actively get involved in making key decisions at the MLS club, which is more than likely to relaunch in 2-3 years from now. New York Red Bulls Head Coach Mike Petke summed up the opposition on Friday when he said Chivas USA is a “young hard working team, organized, run hard and fast. Anticipate them coming in organized.” The rain that had been falling on the way over from the parking lot had stopped, so before the game the grounds crew turned on the sprinklers. The arena was thinly attended and the wet fans stared at the profusion of water. While it seemed like pointless overkill, it was just the beginning of a match where the words would take on new depth. At ... Read more
