Most-watched soccer games on US TV for September 25-October 7, 2018

The latest edition of the Mexican Súper Clásico featuring the nation’s two largest clubs Chivas de Guadalajara and Club América drew 1.677 million viewers on the evening of Sunday, September 30. It ranks as the fifth most-watched club football match in the United States in 2018 with the two clubs’ meeting in March on top at 2.485 million viewers. The match was also down nearly 13% from both the 2016 and 2017 Apertura meetings between the clubs. Univision is seeing great success with their coverage of the UEFA Champions League. September 19th’s Campeones Cup match between Toronto FC and Tigres UANL averaged a combined 1.2 million viewers, with Univision contributing 1.1 million viewers to the total and ESPN2 providing an additional 101,000 viewers. Tigres’ 3-1 victory over Toronto FC currently ranks as the second most-watched club soccer match in the United States since the conclusion of the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia. The September 11 international friendly between the United States and Mexico in Nashville drew a combined 3.127 million viewers, making it the most-watched non-World Cup soccer match on American television in 2018. The United States’ defeat against Brazil four days earlier was watched by a combined 1.912 million viewers, making it the second most-watched match involving the United States Men’s National Team team this year. The Bundesliga’s opening round matchup between Borussia Dortmund and RB Leipzig averaged 395,000 viewers on the FOX broadcast network making it the most-watched Bundesliga match on an English-language network since November 19, 2016 when Borussia Dortmund faced Bayern Munich, also on FOX. Manchester City’s 2-1 victory over Newcastle was watched by 870,000 viewers on NBC, down slightly from 876,000 for NBC’s corresponding matchup last season but up from 831,000 viewers for Liverpool’s 1-0 victory over Brighton one week earlier. Last Saturday’s Chelsea’s 3-2 victory over Arsenal drew a combined 1.167 million viewers on NBC and Universo, making it the most-watched soccer match on American television since the conclusion of the 2018 FIFA World Cup. Through the first two rounds, the Premier League is averaging 587,500 viewers, up slightly from 578,250 in the first two rounds of the 2017-18 season. The UEFA Super Cup averaged 871,000 viewers across TNT and Univision’s networks. The opening round of the 2018-19 Premier League season averaged 621,667 viewers across NBC, NBCSN, Telemundo and Universo, down 3% from 601,500 for the opening round last year. Viewership reached its peak as the round ended for the late Sunday kickoff featuring Arsenal and defending champions Manchester City with 1.024 million tuning in on NBCSN and Telemundo. The 2018 MLS All-Star Game drew a combined 947,000 viewers across ESPN and UniMás, a drop of more than 50% when compared to the 2017 All-Star Game against Real Madrid. The Spanish-language broadcast saw a 67% decrease in viewership with only 495,000 watching the match on UniMás this year. ESPN saw a slight 8% increase over FS1’s coverage last season, contributing 452,000 viewers to the total. Liga MX has returned, averaging 379,765 viewers per match window through the first two weeks of the 2018 Apertura, down from 551,385 viewers in the first two weeks of the 2017 Apertura. Even with the benefit of three extra broadcasts to open the 2018 Apertura, total viewership is also down 10% from 7.168 million viewers in the first two weeks of 2017 to 6.456 million in 2018.
