FOX Sports and Telemundo Deportes averaged a combined 4.9 million viewers for the final round of the Group Stage, up 24% from the first round of matches and up 7.5% from the second round. Viewership for the third games in the Group Stage peaked for Mexico’s match against Sweden with FOX and Telemundo combining for 6.565 million viewers, a 40% decrease from Mexico’s victory over Korea. Mexico’s second round victory over Korea drew a combined 11.037 million viewers to FOX and Telemundo, making it the most-watched match of the World Cup thus far. It was also Telemundo’s most-watched match with 6.6 million viewers tuning in to their coverage. Germany’s comeback victory over Sweden surpassed FOX’s previous high for viewership, drawing 5.397 million viewers to the English-language broadcast. This represents an increase of over 1 million viewers from FOX’s highest viewed game in round 1 between Brazil and Switzerland. The first round of the 2018 FIFA World Cup has concluded with Telemundo just slightly edging out FOX Sports in viewership. Telemundo averaged 1.968 million viewers through the first 16 matches of the tournament while FOX averaged 1.963 million viewers across the FOX broadcast network and FOX Sports 1. So far, TV viewership from the U.S. has dropped about 44% compared with the last tournament in 2014, according to data from Nielsen. Telemundo is in more than 53 million homes in the United States. The Liga MX Clasura final series featuring Toluca and Santos Laguna averaged 1.871 million viewers over both legs on Univision and Univision Deportes, which was a 7% drop from the 2017 Clasura final between Chivas de Guadalajara and Tigres. FOX’s final UEFA Champion’s League broadcast averaged record 2.004 million viewers as Real Madrid celebrated their third consecutive Champions League title. Santos Laguna knocked out Club América in the 2018 Clasura semifinal on Sunday before an audience of 2.167 million on Univision and Univision Deportes, the most for a Liguilla match so far in 2018 and the second largest audience for a Liga MX match in 2018 behind only the Super Clásico in March. Both legs of the semifinal averaged 1.82 million viewers while the other semifinal between Club Tijuana and Toluca averaged 572,000 viewers on Univision Deportes. Club América’s 4-1 victory over Pumas UNAM in the first leg of the Liga MX Quarter-finals drew 1.543 million viewers to Univision and Univision Deportes, the network’s largest viewership since March’s SuperClásico. Tuesday’s UEFA Champion’s League Semi-Final second leg match on FOX Sports 1 was the network’s most-watched Champion’s League broadcast of the 2017-2018 season and beat out every FOX Sports 1 broadcast for the 2016-2017 campaign, drawing 471,000 viewers to the network. Last week’s CONCACAF Champions League Final 2nd Leg attracted 1.525 million viewers, making it the third most-watched club soccer match in the United States in 2018 behind March’s SuperClásico on Univision and April’s Manchester Derby on NBC and Telemundo. The two-legged series averaged 1.155 million viewers. Last Sunday’s MLS broadcast on ESPN featuring the Colorado Rapids and Orlando City was the network’s least-watched MLS match since October 2016 and the third least-watched since ESPN began its most recent broadcast deal with the league that same year. The FA Cup Semi-Final matchup between Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur drew 804,000 viewers to FOX and FOX Deportes combined, making it the most-watched soccer broadcast on the FOX network since the MLS/NFL doubleheader in September, 2017. It was a poor week for Liga MX on Univision’s networks as both Club América and Chivas de Guadalajara played their matches late Friday drawing 376,000 and 598,000 viewers respectively.
