The 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup reached its conclusion on Sunday, breaking many records in the process particularly on the Spanish-language side. Sunday morning’s final delivered a total audience of 1.6 million viewers on Telemundo’s broadcast, making it the most-watched FIFA Women’s World Cup match in the history of Spanish-language television. The tournament, as a whole, also set a record for the most-watched FIFA Women’s World Cup ever on Spanish-language television, with Telemundo averaging 301,000 viewers per match across all of their platforms, a 27% increase from the 2015 World Cup in Canada. The United States Women’s final group stage match at the Women’s World Cup averaged combined 4.145 million viewers resulting in an average audience of 4.428 million for US matches during the group stage. Overall, the Women’s World Cup group stage averaged 1.342 million viewers across FOX, FS1, Telemundo and Universo, with over 86% of viewers watching in English. Telemundo’s coverage of the 2019 Copa América is averaging 969,429 viewers through the first 14 matches of the competition. The United States Women’s National team dominated the airwaves last week with both of their opening matches coming in as the two most-watched soccer matches of the week. The two matches averaged 3.975 million viewers on the FOX broadcast network and an additional 675,000 viewers on Telemundo for a combined 4.65 million average viewers. FOX is averaging 1.03 million viewers through their first 24 broadcasts of the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup with matches on the FOX broadcast network averaging more than 1.7 million viewers and matches on FOX Sports 1 averaging nearly 460,000 viewers. The opening weekend of the FIFA Women’s World Cup averaged 1.068 million viewers across the networks of FOX and Telemundo. Over 75% of viewers so far have elected to watch the tournament in English as FOX and FOX Sports 1 are averaging 808,000 viewers through their first seven broadcasts. When limiting the pool to broadcasts available over the air only, FOX is averaging 1.26 million viewers and Telemundo is averaging 293,000. It was another disappointing weekend for MLS yet again on television with Univision delivering their three least-watched MLS broadcasts of the season so far. Friday saw a double-header on UniMás featuring two of the leagues more popular clubs in Los Angeles Galaxy and Atlanta United with both matches failing to draw more than 200,000 viewers — averaging just 183,500 between them. The UEFA Champions League semifinals averaged 695,000 viewers on Univision, the largest average audience ever for a semifinal round on any network, regardless of language. Both legs of the Barcelona-Liverpool series now sit as the two most-watched UEFA Champions League semifinals of all time in the United States with Leg 1 on May 1 averaging a combined 1.424 million viewers and Leg 2 on May 7 averaging a combined 1.434 million viewers. Univision’s telecast of the UEFA Champions League semifinal first leg between Barcelona and Liverpool ranked as the most-watched UCL semifinal match ever on any network in the United States with an average audience of 763,000 on Univision’s networks. TNT contributed an additional 635,000 viewers to bring the total up to 1.398 million viewers. Major League Soccer’s struggles on FS1 continued last week with Minnesota United’s 1-0 victory over DC United averaging just 91,000 viewers on the network. In 2019, this is the second time already that a MLS game on FOX Sports 1 has averaged fewer than 100,000 viewers. MLS matches on ESPN networks are averaging 256,333 while Univision is averaging 264,750 viewers for their broadcasts. With one round left in the Liga MX Clausura, ratings for matches on Univision’s flagship network are down 10% from the 2018 Clausura.
