Club América’s 2-0 defeat of Landon Donovan’s Club León drew 1.255 million viewers on Univision and Univision Deportes, making it the sixth most-watched Liga MX match of the season and the 12th Liga MX match in 2018 to draw more than 1 million viewers. The UEFA Champions League Round of 16 averaged 331,875 viewers on FOX Sports 1, up 20% from 275,125 in the 2016-17 campaign. Houston Dynamo’s 4-0 defeat of Atlanta United kicked off the 2018 Major League Soccer season on American television with 469,000 viewers tuning into Univision’s coverage of the match. Viewership saw an 8% decrease from 509,000 for Los Angeles Galaxy vs FC Dallas last year. FOX Sports 1 saw an even bigger drop with their two matches averaging only 174,000 viewers, down over 40% from their first two broadcasts of 2017. The month of February saw six matches break the 1 million viewer mark with 3 of them coming on February 10. Manchester City and Leicester City kicked things off by drawing a total of 1.245 million viewers on NBC and Universo, which ranked as the fourth most-watched soccer match of 2018. Most-watched soccer games on US TV for January 26-28, 2018

Tigres’ 3-2 victory over Pachuca on Saturday, January 27 was the only Liga MX to draw more than 1 million viewers last week with Club América’s victory over Atlas drawing the second highest viewership of the week with nearly 800,000 viewers. The United States Men’s National Team played Bosnia to a 0-0 draw on Sunday, January 28. The game was watched by an audience of 331,000 on FOX Sports 1, which was down significantly from the 2017 January friendly against Serbia which was watched by 596,000 on ESPN2. Most-watched soccer games on US TV for January 11-22, 2018

Last weekend three Liga MX matches have each drawn more than 1 million viewers for the first time on Univision’s networks. It all began Saturday night when 1.143 million witnessed Monterrey and Tijuana play to a 0-0 draw, followed by Chivas’ 3-1 victory over Necaxa, which was viewed by 1.308 million. Then the Sunday match between Club América and top-of-the-table Pumas was watched by another 1.172 million. Most-watched soccer games on US TV for December 26-January 7

Liga MX returned to American television last week with an average audience of 653,714 viewers on Univision’s networks, down 26% from the 2017 Clasura. However, it is worth noting that as of the 2017 Apertura, more matches are aired live on Univision’s networks across more timeslots. Total viewership for the first week of the season was up almost 4% at 4.58 million. Meanwhile, FA Cup 3rd Round matches on FS1 averaged 284,600 viewers last week, up 15% from 247,167 for the 2016-17 edition of the competition. Tigres’ 3-2 aggregate victory over Monterrey in the Liga MX Apertura final averaged 2.35 million viewers across two matches on Univision and Univision Deportes, down 23% from 3.05 million average viewers across both legs of the 2016 Apertura final featuring Club América and Tigres but up 16% from 2.02 million average viewers for both legs of the 2016 Clasura final between Chivas and Tigres. Liga MX’s Liguilla has nearly come to an end, averaging 1.051 million viewers per match through the semi-final round. Single-match viewership peaked in the quarter-final round as 2.174 million viewers tuned in as Club América closed out the aggregate 0-0 series to advance and to face Tigres in the semi-finals via the high seed tiebreaker. Club América’s semi-final series against Tigres averaged 1.785 million viewers despite América being demolished 4-0 on aggregate.
