Earlier this year, we complied a list of the attendance for the US Men’s National Team (USMNT) over the course of a full World Cup Qualifying cycle (from post-2014 World Cup through the qualifying failure against Trinidad & Tobago in October 2017). So with the US Women’s National Team having already played their final game of their send-off series recently before the Women’s World Cup in France, it’s now time to take a look at the full four year cycle for attendance at WNT games in the US.

Attendance for the USWNT for the 2015-2019 cycle was 18,145, which is up 17% from 15,499 per game over the course of the previous cycle from 2011 to 2015. That’s quite an impressive jump. What makes it even more impressive is the fact that from 2011 to 2015 the WNT played 44 games at home, but during the most recent cycle the number of home games jumped up to 69. So not only was the WNT drawing bigger crowds at home, but they played more games at home too.

Another thing worth noting is that a much higher percentage of the home games for the WNT were played in venues with natural grass surfaces, as opposed to turf. During the previous cycle, 9 of the 44 games (20%) were played on turf fields. For the most recent cycle, that number was just 8 out of 69 games (11%). The majority of those eight games came during the post-Women’s World Cup Victory Tour in 2015, which did see one game against Trinidad & Tobago in Honolulu cancelled because of the appalling state of the turf. Since 2016 however, games on turf have been few and far between.

One oddity of some of these attendances is that some of the biggest competitive games (WWC Qualifying and Olympic Qualifying) drew the smallest crowds. Three of the five games during Olympic Qualifying drew under 10,000 fans and all five of the WWC Qualifying games drew under 10,000 fans. Perhaps one reason for that is all three group stage games being played in one stadium and then the semi-finals and final being played in one stadium. It’s worth noting that these games are not entirely under the control of US Soccer as they are handled by CONCACAF. On the flip side the two mini-tournaments that US Soccer tries to treat like competitive games (the She Believes Cup and the Tournament of Nations) typically draw the largest crowds.
