There is something quite magical about soccer over the festive period. Not only is it plentiful in its amount, it is also almost always available to watch because it is not on Saturday at 3pm and thus outside of the blackout period still a part of English soccer culture. According to the telegraph.co.uk, we might not have the blackout much longer but for now festive soccer is a chance to catch almost every game live and uninterrupted.

It is really quite special to watch the boxing day soccer with a whimsical Christmas jumper on, a leftover sandwich in your hand and a box of chocolates from your grandma ready to be opened. Many other leagues seem to get slower during this period with players gagging for the winter break and ready to go off and do something else. Tuesday 26th December: Spurs vs Southampton

Two teams that have been struggling recently meet during the early kick-off on Boxing Day with both desperate to end 2018 with a bang. Spurs suffered a heavy defeat to Manchester City recently and it seems any hope of challenging for the title again has gone. They will still be battling hard though to make the top four and this is the kind of game you have to win if you want to prove yourselves amongst the best four teams in the land. Southampton have never really gotten into a rhythm under Mauricio Pellegrino but buoyed by a set of away fans desperate to get one over the club that took current superstar manager Mauricio Pochettino away from them, the Saints will be hoping to spring a surprise.

Saturday 30th December: Liverpool vs Leicester

This game has thrown up some superb ties since Leicester returned to the Premier League in 2014 and fans will be hoping this one is in that mould. Leicester came from behind at Anfield in 2015 to secure a desperately needed point in a match that had two penalties. During Leicester’s title-winning campaign Liverpool were one of only two sides to beat the Foxes putting them to the sword at Anfield but in the game at the King Power Jamie Vardy scored one of the Premier League’s great goals in an important win for the Foxes. Fans will be hoping this game is just as good, both teams blow hot and cold but if they are both on form then it will be a cracking tie.

Monday 1st January: Manchester United vs Everton

The late game on New Year’s Day sees a superb Manchester United side who would be cruising at the top of the table if not for neighbours Manchester City take on an Everton side who look rejuvenated under Sam Allardyce. This is another game which is always great, who can forget the amazing 4-4 draw in the year Manchester City won their first Premier League crown, 2012. With Wayne Rooney returning to Old Trafford the tie has a little more spice and narrative to it making it an even more compelling watch. Both sides will be hoping to start the new year well with United knowing City will pounce on any slip-up and Everton desperate not to drop back into the relegation fight. It is a game that also sees two managers in Mourinho and Allardyce who have not always seen eye to eye.
