Although originally scheduled to air live on FS1, FOX Sports has moved the Mexico vs. Costa Rica game from FS1 to FS2 for Friday night’s important World Cup qualifier.

The match was originally advertised that it would air beginning at 8:30pm ET on FS1, but FOX Sports will instead show the game at 9:50pm ET on FS2 and will then a replay of the game on FS1 following the USA vs. Honduras match. With the USA-Honduras game scheduled to kick off at 10:50pm ET, it’s probable that the Mexico-Costa Rica rerun won’t air until 1am ET — after the result will already be known.

According to an announcement by FOX Sports, the broadcaster will air “pregame coverage for both World Cup qualifiers at 9:30pm ET on FS1 and FS2.”

Thankfully, the Mexico-Costa Rica World Cup qualifier will be shown live on Univision and Univision Deportes, which are more accessible for many soccer fans than FS2.

FOX Sports issued no explanation for the late programming change and why they decided to relegate the Mexico-Costa Rica broadcast to FS2. Either FOX Sports made a mistake with the start time or the kickoff time moved, which would have not allowed FOX Sports to do their pre-game coverage of the USA-Honduras game.

For the past 3-4 weeks, the network has been promoting FS1’s double-header of Mexico-Costa Rica and USA-Honduras so the last minute decision is bizarre given the amount of promotion the broadcaster has done.

For FOX Sports, Jorge Pérez-Navarro and Cobi Jones will commentate the match with Francisco X. Rivera reporting from the sidelines at the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City.

Meanwhile, Univision Deportes sent out a press release on Thursday to state the new updated time for the Mexico-Costa Rica game, which will air beginning at 9pm ET on Univision and Univision Deportes.
