Milan (AFP) – AC Milan’s Ignazio Abate has been ruled out for the remainder of the season as he recovers from eye surgery following an injury suffered against Sassuolo last month.

Milan, currently seventh in Serie A at 20 points behind leaders Juventus, will welcome the defender back during the summer, according to a statement.

“AC Milan announces that Ignazio Abate, after several medical examinations in Italy, went to Miami for expert medical opinion in relation to the blunt force trauma to his left eye suffered against Sassuolo on February 26,” said a statement.

“The results of the visit are positive and his recovery is proceeding smoothly. Treatment will give Abate the opportunity to resume training during the summer preparation phase for the 2017/2018 season.”

Milan, the seven-time European champions, are battling for a place in next season’s Europa League after dropping off the pace to qualify for the Champions League.

Vincenzo Montella’s men are 10 points behind Napoli, in the third and last qualifying spot for Europe’s premier club competition, but only two behind fifth-placed Inter.
