Players can sometimes take some time to fully adapt to new clubs; however, there have been quite a few transfers that have paid off immediately during the 2016/17 Premier League season. Let’s take a look at 10 2016 summer transfers that are already paying dividends. These 10 players will be split into two categories. First, the top five summer transfers that cost teams at least £20 million. Secondly, a list of five top players that Premier League clubs received for a bargain.

Expensive

Marcos Alonso – £23 million

A lot of players (and manager Antonio Conte) receive praise for Chelsea’s stunning Premier League form, but Alonso is seemingly somehow flying under the radar. Brought in from Serie A outfit Fiorentina, the wing back is a perfect fit in Conte’s preferred 3-5-2 formation. Without a true weakness, Alonso is well-rounded, as he contributes both defensively (2.8 tackles per game) and going forward (1 goal and 2 assists).

Christian Benteke – £27 million

The Belgium international endured a tough 2015/16 campaign with Liverpool. After scoring just nine Premier League goals on the season, Benteke was sent to Crystal Palace this summer to be give another chance to shine. Despite only featuring in 15 league matches for the Eagles so far, the center forward has managed to score eight goals, as well as one assist.

N’Golo Kante – £30 million

Yet another fantastic signing by Conte, the former Leicester City standout hasn’t lost a step during his time with Chelsea so far. Ranked inside the top ten among Premier League players in both tackles and interceptions per game, Kante is the perfect defensive midfielder. Not only has the France international been a rock in the middle of the pitch, but his 64 passes per game and 89% pass completion also rank very highly.

Shkodran Mustafi – £35 million

While he’s only been in north London for about four months, Mustafi’s importance with the Gunners is undeniable. With the Germany international on the pitch, Arsenal have not lost a match (12 wins, 5 draws, 0 losses). His partnership with Laurent Koscielny give the Gunners one of the top center back duo’s in England. A very versatile and well-rounded defender, Mustafi’s 3.1 interceptions per game and 72% aerial duels are among the league leaders.

Sadio Mane – £30 million

Mane has without a doubt been one of the standout performers in the Premier League this season. Though is price tag was high, he has proved his worth on the pitch. The Senegal international has netted eight goals and four assists in Premier League play with Liverpool during the current campaign. A quick and creative player, Mane has been instrumental in his club’s ascension of the Premier League table.

Bargains

Leroy Fer – £3.5 million

Although Fer did play for Swansea last season, his move to Wales was made permanent this summer for a fee of just £3.5 million. The central midfielder certainly isn’t flashy, yet he just gets the job done for the Swans. Fer’s six goals (most among Premier League central midfielders) nearing the halfway point of the season is more than he managed to score during all of the 2015/16 campaign with QPR and Swansea.

Idrissa (Gana) Gueye – £7 million

Everton hit one of the park when they signed Gueye from Aston Villa over the summer. Mane’s Senegal teammate, Gueye is a no-nonsense defensive midfielder. His 4.9 tackles per match are tops among Premier League players (by far), and an 86% passing success shows that he makes good decisions with the ball at his feet as well. Though Everton have had a bit of an up and down season, Gueye has arguably been their best player so far.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic – Free

It may be cheating a bit to include a player that makes £220,000 per week in this category; however, Manchester United did not have to pay a transfer fee to obtain Zlatan. Despite being 35, the former Sweden international has already scored 16 total goals on the campaign (11 during Premier League play). While United are currently sitting in sixth place, Ibrahimovic is doing his part to help the Red Devils challenge for the title this season.

Joel Matip – Free

Liverpool’s defense is undoubtedly the club’s current weak spot, as the Merseyside team have let in 20 league goals in just 17 matches (worst among the top seven clubs in the table). However, Matip has actually played well for manager Jurgen Klopp. In 12 league matches with Matip on the pitch, Liverpool have given up 11 goals. This is compared to letting in nine goals in five matches in which the Cameroon international has not taken part of. Liverpool fans will hope that Matip recovers quickly from an ankle injury.

Matt Phillips – £5 million

A bit under the radar with this pick. Phillips has racked up three goals and five assists on the season with the Baggies. A Scotland international, Phillips is a pacy and creative winger who can also help out defensively when his team does not have the ball. His back-to-back superb performances against Leicester City and Burnley in November (a goal and an assist in each game) earned him two Man of the Match awards.
