The big Premier League clubs get all of the attention. Between what matches are televised on important channels, and the players included in the PFA Team of the Year, the two Manchester clubs, Arsenal, Chelsea, & Liverpool usually dominate the limelight. Nevertheless, there are players from other teams in England’s top tier that should receive high praise. Here are five players from “smaller” clubs that are performing exceptionally well during the early stages of the 2016/17 Premier League season.

Curtis Davies – Hull City

The 31-year-old defender has been a brick wall for the Tigers so far this season. Davies is currently leading the Premier League in blocks, clearances, and interceptions. The former West Brom, Aston Villa, and Birmingham City player may not have a senior England cap under his belt, but he has proven to be a very dependable center back since joining his current club three years ago.

Etienne Capoue – Watford

Entering the 2016/17 season, Capoue had netted two total goals in 72 matches with both Tottenham Hotspur and Watford. In five games so far in the current campaign, the defensive midfielder has scored three times. The former Spurs outcast appears to have found a home in the base of Watford’s midfield. Capoue boasts more interceptions, tackles, a higher average pass length, and a much better shot accuracy than both Paul Pogba and Nemanja Matic.

Leroy Fer – Swansea City

Although he has made 11 appearances for the senior Netherlands team, Fer is not necessarily a household name in the world of soccer. With three goals in his first four matches, the central midfielder has already surpassed his goal total from all of last season. Fer has also racked up more successful passes than Dele Alli, and a better aerial duel percentage than the aforementioned Pogba (70% to 64%).

Idrissa Gueye – Everton

Gueye’s summer move from Aston Villa to Everton for around £7 million seems to be a very shrewd piece of business by manager Ronald Koeman. The Senegal international leads the Premier League in tackles, is fourth in passing percentage (91%) by midfielders that have played at least three matches, and has successfully completed 238 total passes in Premier League play as well. The Toffees have gotten off to flying start (three wins and a draw), and Gueye’s play in midfield has played a big part of the team’s success so far this season.

Michail Antonio – West Ham

Having already netted four goals, Antonio is currently tied for the Premier League lead in goals scored alongside Diego Costa and Zlatan Ibrahimovic. The versatile player has been deployed as either a right back or winger by Slaven Bilic, however, Antonio is much better suited in a more advanced role than in defense. The 26-year-old’s high level of play earned him his first call into the senior England national team earlier in the month.
