Madrid (AFP) – Argentina midfielder Nicolas Gaitan moved to European Champions League runners-up Atletico Madrid from Benfica on Thursday in a deal worth 25 million euros.

“Atletico Madrid and Benfica have reached an agreement for the transfer of Nicolas Gaitan to his new team,” said a statement from Atletico who were third in La Liga last season.

Gaitan, 28, who is currently taking part in the Copa America in the United States, began his career with Boca Juniors before moving to Benfica in 2010.

He played six seasons in Portugal, scoring 41 goals in 252 meetings and helped the Lisbon giants to three league titles as well as the 2013 and 2014 Europa League final.
