Lens (France) (AFP) – England striker Jamie Vardy hopes he has done enough to win a starting role after coming off the bench to score as Roy Hodgson’s men beat Wales 2-1 on Thursday.
Hero of Leicester City’s fairytale Premier League triumph, Vardy was an unused substitute in England’s opening 1-1 draw against Russia, but made his mark to equalise after Gareth Bale gave Wales a 1-0 lead before Daniel Sturridge scored a stoppage-time winner.
“I think everyone wants to be a part and play in the starting line-up,” Vardy told the BBC.
“It is a team game, there are 23 of us, so to come off the bench you want to make an impact and thankfully I did that today.”
Vardy is hoping to start when England face Slovakia on Monday in their final Group B game.
“Hopefully we will get another win to top the group. I will be trying my hardest in training, so we will find out (if I start) in the next game.”
