Lisbon (AFP) – Nuno Espirito Santo was on Wednesday named as the new coach of Porto, two days after the sacking of Jose Peseiro.

The 42-year-old former goalkeeper has signed a two-year deal, Porto said in a statement.

Nuno, who played for Porto, ended his playing career in 2010 before taking up his first coaching post at Rio Ave two years later.

He also coached Valencia in Spain for more than a year.

Peseiro only took the reins at Porto in January following the sacking of Spaniard Julen Lopetegui.

But Porto could finish only third in the league and were beaten by Sporting Braga in the cup final.

At a club that won nine titles between 2003 and 2013 but has won nothing since, that was deemed a failure.
