TV viewing numbers for MLS have increased 15% so far this season compared to the regular season averages from last year. With ESPN, FOX Sports and Univision establishing a set schedule of broadcasts each weekend as well as improved coverage, it’s finally some good news for a league that hasn’t had much to rave about lately when it comes to US TV numbers.

Here are the latest numbers for 2015 and 2016:

Networks 2015 regular season average
ESPN 244,970
FOX Sports 196,545
Univision 244,000

Total average 228,505
Networks 2016 regular season average
ESPN 255,500
FOX Sports 244,000
Univision 290,167

Total average 263,222

Interestingly, the biggest percentage growth has been by FOX Sports, who are 24% above their average for last season. Having said that, FOX does have the most room for improvement based on last season’s lowest average of the three broadcasters (196,545). But they’re quickly catching up on ESPN, which is good to see. Meanwhile, Univision is up 18% while ESPN has seen a growth of 4.29%.

There’s still a long way to go in the season. And MLS will want to stay relevant throughout the summer. Plus, the league will be looking forward with anticipation to the 4 MLS games that will be televised live on the over-the-air FOX network (1 in May and 3 in July), which will certainly boost this season’s numbers even more.
